Transgender-Friendly Jobs

If you are transgender then you should be able to enjoy the same rights as anyone else in the workplace. Some industries and employers definitely make more of an effort to create a trans-inclusive work environment. How can you find the best transgender-friendly jobs?

Your Rights in the Workplace

Employers must follow the law and respect your workplace rights, this means they should not discriminate against transgender people, or any LGBTQ+ people who apply for roles within their company.

There are laws in place to protect LGBTQ+ people from discrimination, and the Equality Act 2010 specifically includes transgender rights. For instance, allowing you to dress in the clothes you see fit rather than using a gender-specific dress code.

Finding a Transgender-Friendly Employer

Just because an employer is legally obliged to follow the Equality Act 2010, it doesn’t mean they will be LGBTQ+ friendly. There are some steps you can take to find employers who not only respect but actively support transgender people and their rights in the workplace.

Look for a Policy

Your employer should have a policy that relates to LGBTQ+ rights in the workplace. This could include things such as dress code, use of pronouns, and bathroom access. If they don’t have one then it might be a good indication that they are not a particularly trans-inclusive employer.

Get Involved with Transgender Networks

Many large employers have active transgender networks which provide support and guidance to transgender employees. If your employer doesn’t have one, you could always start your own! This is a great way to get more involved in the company and also make sure that your rights are being respected.

There are many ways that employers can become more trans-inclusive, but it ultimately comes down to respecting the rights of transgender employees. By finding a trans-friendly employer you can be sure that you will have a safe and welcoming workplace and transgender equality.

Transgender Jobs

Though you should be allowed to apply for the jobs you wish to regardless of your gender identity, there are a few jobs that are usually safe options for transgender-friendly employment, such as:

  • Gender-diverse and LGBT charities
  • Social workers
  • Working within the NHS
  • LGBT+ and diversity support work

These are just a few examples, and it’s important to remember that not every transgender person will automatically feel they are in a good place just by working in one of these workplaces. It is important to find the job that best suits you and your needs and has a supportive company culture.
