Principal Engineer – Electrical Engineer (Communications)

We currently have a vacancy for a Principal Engineer – Electrical Engineer (Communications).

As a Principal Engineer – Electrical Engineer (Communications), you will be responsible for supporting the team in architecting and developing the Internal Platform Communications System for the UK’s next class of nuclear submarine (SSNR).

This role will provide you an opportunity to work on a once in a lifetime project, as you will be helping to define and shape the design of the Royal Navy’s next generation attack class submarine.

You will be working to implement novel internal communications technology and concepts whilst collaborating with colleagues within the Integrated Combat Systems business, wider stakeholders, suppliers and the Royal Navy.

The role will require the following responsibilities:

  • Undertaking functional design, providing specialist advice and producing evidence in support of legislative, safety and technical requirements
  • Liaising with internal and external customers as part of a technical team
  • Undertaking peer reviews
  • Articulating and presenting technical arguments, clearly, logically and simply

As a Principal Engineer, the role will include:

You will design and create solutions to support the definition of SSN(R) Internal Communications Systems. Working as a key SME in the communications engineering domain you will work with the team across multiple stakeholders within the project. You will support the team on a day to day basis with technical decisions, design reviews and producing the detailed design documentation.

This is a key technical role for candidates with a strong background who have the ability to produce internal communication designs and telephony solutions from concept and experience.

You will contribute to the definition of the communication systems scope, security, safety, capabilities and through-life management intent for numerous telephony systems on board a UK submarine.

As part of your role, you will be expected to be able to write technical specifications clearly and succinctly, and produce graphical, schematic, and written artefacts to explain their work to the customer, to their peers, and to their critics.

Your skills and qualifications:

A relevant Science, Technology, Engineering or, Mathematics (STEM) Degree or equivalent qualification and experience within an engineering background.

Significant demonstrable experience of engineering lifecycle phases and technical specialities.

Proven track record of system or equipment design – communications and electronic areas.

Experience of VOIP and data networks.

Strong technical report writing skills and experienced in requirements definition and management.

A detailed understanding of at least one of the following disciplines:

  • Design and deployment of Voice Over IP (VOIP) networks
  • Deployment of Private Branch Exchange systems (PBX)
  • Acoustics modelling and simulation
  • Speech quality analysis
  • Design of public address or voice alarm or installed sound systems
  • Design of audio distribution systems
  • Design of trunked radio systems
  • Design of communications systems for safety critical applications
  • Design and installation of electrical equipment in explosive atmospheres

Having obtained or capable of obtaining relevant Professional Registration (CEng)

You will be self-motivated and have the ability to work unsupervised and still meet tight deadlines. At the same time you will have excellent communication skills and be able to work collaboratively with the wider team when required. The ability to proactively problem solve is key to the success of this role.
