Materials Engineer – Mechanical Testing

Would you like to be part of our Materials Engineering team to work on complex, innovative and world-leading projects such as Tempest, Typhoon and F-35 Lightning II? We currently have a vacancy for a Materials Engineer in Mechanical Testing at our site in Samlesbury.

As a Materials Engineer – Mechanical Testing, you will be carrying out materials testing and evaluation activities across a broad range of programmes, whilst also supporting materials qualification projects, production support and in-service support activities.

This role will provide you with opportunities to develop your career and experiences, and learn new technologies in a dynamic, World Class technical environment. Over time, there will be opportunities for further career advancement and to work across different teams. Join us and you will be working alongside other functions to deliver products that will be in service for 40+ years and being continually upgraded to maintain our customer’s Air Defence capabilities.

Your main responsibilities as a Materials Engineer – Mechanical Testing will involve:

  • Materials testing and evaluation support to a broad range of programmes with respect to materials and processing activities
  • Delivering fit for purpose materials and process solutions to these programmes, supporting materials qualification projects, production support and in-service support
  • Developing improvements to existing products, techniques, technology, services or operating procedures
  • Product and supply assurance, developing materials and process standards and technical and legislative data gathering
  • You will be required to write technical reports, make technical decisions based on the available data with integrity, and provide a first-rate customer service to our internal and external customers.
  • Using known mechanical testing techniques such as tensile testing, proof loading, peel testing and fatigue testing.

Your skills and qualifications:

Essential:

  • Degree or HNC/HND or an equivalent qualification/ experience in a STEM-related subject e.g. Materials Science, Chemistry, Metallurgy, Aerospace Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics.
  • Competent in Mathematics
  • Understanding of mechanical testing principles and experience in mechanical testing techniques
  • Experience of subject areas such as aerospace materials, materials evaluation, or materials selection within industry
  • A basic understanding of the main phases of an airframe design product lifecycle
  • An awareness of the importance of operational governance in achieving product integrity
  • Experience in writing technical test plans, technical reports and test reports
  • Working to defined standards and processes

Desirable:

  • Experience working in a multi-disciplinary environment, understanding the integration of materials engineering with areas such as airframe engineering, design engineering, manufacturing engineering, quality, and procurement.
  • Experience in both static and fatigue methods.
  • Chartered Status or willingness to achieve.

We are looking for enthusiastic and self-motivated individuals who will enjoy working in a practical ‘hands on’ testing role. You will be proactive and dynamic and suggest and implement improvements to current techniques and operating procedures. You will be a quick learner and able to contribute to the team activities quickly, with a proven ability of working within a small team. Your excellent communication skills will give you the ability to translate information to a range of stakeholders.
