Interim Health and Safety Advisor (Medical Research / Biomedical)London, UK (Hybrid working)4-6 months£220 per day PAYE£300 per day UmbrellaAbout the roleThe Management Recruitment Group is currently supporting our client, a research-led public sector organisation in London, to recruit an Interim Health and Safety Advisor (Clinical / Pharmaceutical). This is a four- to six-month assignment with the possibility of extension. This is a flexible role with remote working considered, alongside some time spent on site when required.BackgroundThis role covers a diverse range of health and safety issues, including chemical and biological safety, microbiological safety, radiological protection and genetic modification and environmental protection. Advisers are in place in the areas of microbiological safety, radiological protection, and genetic modification, who liaise closely with the Safety, Health and Environment Office. Other areas of emphasis include the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH), Electricity at Work, Fire Precautions and environmental aspects of sustainability and waste control as well as general health and safety and well-being issues.Our client has identified the need to quickly bring an interim resource on board to take over from an existing member of staff. The role will liaise with internal and external specialists, trade unions and other employee representatives and the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) to develop estates policies and procedures that meet the requirements of the law and best practice.The Head of Health and Safety will act as lead competent person to assist the business in undertaking the measures necessary to comply with health and safety legislation and current health and safety policies. The role holder will report to the Assistant Director Safety, Health & Environment and the role has no direct reports.You will bringAs an experienced Health and Safety specialist from a biological sciences background (either consultancy or client-side), you will be responsible for the following key areas: * Assist with ensuring compliance with statutory obligations as prescribed through legislation and best practice guidelines, encouraging, and supporting improvements in safety, health and environmental performance. * Oversee the safety arrangements for the containment level 2 and level 3 laboratories. * Liaise with the Home Office as necessary to enable compliance with requirements on class A / class 1 drugs and chemical weapon convention rules. * Report activities that give may rise to serious and imminent risk of injury to staff, students and members of the general public to the Safety, Health and Environment Manager and relevant line manager. * Assist with the maintenance and development of audit processes to monitor policies and practices. * Manage the waste chemical store and arrange for the disposals of waste chemicals using the most competitive company who are fully compliant with Environment Agency requirements. * Assisting with specialised risk assessments for using Hazard group 2 and 3 organisms * Assist in the production of Local Rules for the handling of radioactive materials and production of risk assessments for the use of the materials.In returnIn return, you will have a leading role within a well-renowned public sector organisation and directly influence the H&S and estate strategy for the next 5 years.
