At [EMBL-EBI]( you can apply your talent and passion to accelerate science and tackle some of humankind’s greatest challenges. EMBL-EBI, part of the [European Molecular Biology Laboratory](, is a worldwide leader in the storage, analysis and dissemination of large biological datasets. We provide the global research community with access to publicly available databases and tools which are crucial for the advancement of healthcare, food security, and biodiversity.*About the role:*An exciting opportunity has been created for a full stack software developer to work on the development of the ChEBI database (, which contains detailed information on small molecule compounds in biology. ChEBI is a very widely used resource, with a growing user base numbered in the hundreds of thousands and with millions of accesses every year. In addition, ChEBI provides molecular data to many of the key global biological databases upon which researchers in the biosciences are increasingly reliant. We recently received funding from the BBSRC to rewrite and improve the software and data infrastructure of ChEBI so that it can continue to fulfil this critical role in the future. This “new ChEBI” will be developed using modern software technologies, making it easier to support, and will be more flexible, efficient and sustainable. This is a unique and exciting opportunity to work on a significant and widely-used software resource. The successful candidate will be based in the Chemical Biology Team at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) and will closely with other members of the team, together with other groups at EMBL-EBI and collaborators as required. Among other contributions to the project, s/he will be responsible for developing the REST web services, the new web interface, a unified annotation tool and data export pipelines. In addition to having relevant software engineering and programming skills you will need to have excellent attention to detail, good communication skills and be able to interact not only with other software engineers but also with ChEBI’s many users.*Responsibilities:** Develop key elements of the “new ChEBI” database and resource including the REST web services, the new web interface, a unified annotation tool and data export pipelines* Interact with key users of ChEBI at EMBL-EBI and our global collaborators to actively solicit feedback as the project progresses* Be an active member of the chemical biology team of software engineers, curators and scientists* Interact with the wider ChEBI user community, for example at events such as workshops and conferences* Contribute to the broader goals of the team and EMBL-EBI in developing resources for the scientific community*You have:** A post-graduate qualification or equivalent in Information Technology, Computer Science, Bioinformatics or a related discipline* Proficiency using a command line UNIX/Linux environment* A strong command of Python, preferably using Django* Experience with RESTful API development* Proficiency with relational databases such as PostgreSQL* Familiarity with search engines such as ElasticSearch* Experience of the full software development cycle including design, implementation, testing, version control and deployment* Experience developing web interfaces with modern frameworks such as Vue.js* Willingness to learn new skills as the project requires* Self-motivation and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team* Excellent communication, interpersonal and English language skills*You might also have:** Experience working with Docker and Kubernetes* Knowledge of cheminformatics methods and toolkits (e.g. RDKit)* Prior experience working in a multidisciplinary scientific environment* Experience creating and managing complex data processing pipelines-* Private medical insurance (for you and your family) * 30 days annual leave* Flexible work options* Family and children allowances* Pension scheme* Gym* Visa support* Paid relocation * Home leave trips every two years for non UK residents* Child sick days* On-campus nursery* Social events, sports clubs & free passes for punting & the Cambridge botanical gardens * Support with career development* Free shuttle busses * Technical test* Panel video interview with the Team Leader and a couple of colleagues* Informal meet the team Zoom call* References* OfferLinux, Unix, Python, Django, PostgreSQLLinux, Unix, Python, Django, PostgreSQL, Docker, Kubernetes
