Job summary
The band 6 Alcohol Specialist Nurse will be an integral member of the Alcohol Care Team which provides care and treatment for patients with alcohol misuse issues. The band 6 Alcohol Specialist Nurse will work as an autonomous practitioner in the assessment, implementation and evaluation of patient care for those who present with alcohol misuse and alcohol related injuries. They will advise Trust staff on the care and management of acute alcohol withdrawal, deliver training to staff on the management of alcohol dependency and addiction and will be responsible for holding a caseload of individual patients who are not engaging in the community but continue to come to hospital and patients who are pre or post detox.
The band 6 Alcohol Specialist Nurse will be willing to be flexible to meet the needs of the team and must demonstrate knowledge and passion in working within the specialty of alcohol misuse.
The job role will include cross site working between City Hospital and Sandwell Hospitals until we move into the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital in the future. The current working hours are 0800 – 1600, 5 days per week with the view to working 0800 – 1800, 4 days per week in the near future. This includes weekend working.
Main duties of the job
- To comprehensively assess patients, gaining information about their physical health, mental health, social issues as well as their alcohol history to format a plan of care based on the patients individual needs.
- To advise clinical staff on the management of patients experiencing acute alcohol withdrawal, including detoxification medication and vitamin prescribing.
- To advise and support emergency department staff on the admission criteria for patients with alcohol misuse issues attending the department.
- To liaise with and build strong professional relationships with other healthcare professionals both within the hospital and external agencies to meet the needs of the patient.
- To provide training to Trust staff on screening and brief interventions, and to participate in the development and delivery of education programmes.
- To act as team leader in the absence of senior staff.
