Job summary

Consultant in Paediatric Endocrinology Specialising in Bone Disorders and Calcium Metabolism

Applications are invited for a new full-time 10 PA substantive paediatric consultant post specialising in bone disorders and calcium metabolism. The post holder will be based equally at both the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH), Stanmore and the Department of Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes, Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH).

The applicant must have tertiary level experience in managing children and young people with problems of bone and calcium metabolism. The post holder will be required to integrate the service and patient pathways across both sites. The successful candidate will take part in the attending consultant on-call rota at GOSH (1 in 6 weeks). There will be no acute general paediatric duties.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and dynamic individual with previous training at a tertiary level. The RNOH is the largest orthopaedic hospital in the UK, and is a worldwide leader in the field of orthopaedics. It provides a comprehensive range of neuro-musculoskeletal health care, including complex bone tumour work. This is an exciting time to join the GOSH Endocrine Department as it has undergone significant strategic redevelopment with service redevelopment, expansion of staffing levels, full electronic patient records, an attending system and protected time for activities such as research, education, coaching and mentoring and systems management.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will be based equally across both hospitals. GOSH will be the primary employer.

RNOH is a specialist referral centre for rare paediatric bone metabolic and musculoskeletal disease. RNOH runs the paediatric Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP) service for the majority of patients in England and has close clinical and research links with the adult FOP service at RNOH. There are ongoing trials of drug treatments for FOP which are planned to include paediatrics in the near future. RNOH paediatricians provide care for some children referred from the sarcoma service, including those receiving medical treatment for aneurysmal bone cysts and children diagnosed with fibrous dysplasia. There are also a number of children cared for at RNOH with osteogenesis imperfecta. There is a paediatric rheumatology service at RNOH. This service cares for children with inflammatory and non-inflammatory conditions. A team of consultant paediatricians and 4 non consultant grade doctors provide 24 hour care for children at RNOH. Every paediatric inpatient is reviewed by a consultant paediatrician daily.
