This is an exciting opportunity to join Barts Health NHS Trust as a Respiratory Consultant as we set up a Trust wide service for our patients with Interstitial Lung Diseases. There are two posts, one based at St Bartholomew’s and Whipps Cross Hospital, and one predominantly based at Newham Hospital, but including multi-site clinics. The post holders will join the multidisciplinary ILD team which is based at St Bartholomew’s and Mile End Hospital which delivers tertiary care to patients in North East London with ILD and sarcoidosis. Duties will include out-patient clinics, MDTs, ward reviews and responsibility for supporting the ILD nurses. The new posts will be supported by the formation of a Trust wide weekly ILD MDT meeting, supporting cross-site collaboration and standardisation of management.

Main duties of the job

At Whipps Cross Hospital the postholder will join a consultant team caring for respiratory inpatient and day cases patients on a 1 week in 6 rota. They will also join the Advice and Guidance (A&G) rota, have an ILD / general respiratory clinic and take part in a 1 in 20 non-resident general medical on call rota, working towards 7 days working and a 1 in 8 respiratory weekend ward round rota.

At Newham Hospital, the postholder will join the current team of four full time Respiratory Consultants providing ward cover on the Respiratory wards, currently 20 weeks a year, two to three ward rounds per week. There is a plan to move to a Consultant of the Week model for inpatients when the number of consultants rises to six. The postholder will also have General Respiratory Clinics and contribute to a 1 in 18 acute medicine weekend on call rota.

The postholders will also be expected to take an active interest in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate medical staff and other professional groups. They will undertake research and play a full part in the clinical governance structure of the Respiratory Medicine departments and the Trust.

Job responsibilities

To contribute to the provision of a comprehensive specialist Respiratory Medicine service at Barts Health NHS Trust.

To provide evidence-based care for all inpatients and outpatients.

To have regard at all times for the clinical and quality standards.

To liaise effectively and on a timely basis with General Practitioners, community services, and all healthcare agencies and to work collaboratively across East London as required.

To maintain and promote team and multi-disciplinary work across other relevant specialties, working closely with the consultant medical staff.

To participate fully in the management of the Department and to liaise closely with the General Manager and the Clinical Director.

To take an active role in teaching and training in the department and Trust at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.

  • GMC Registration
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • CCT in Respiratory Medicine and General Medicine (or within 6 months of eligibility at the time of interview) or be on the Specialist Register
