Serco are currently recruiting for a caretaker to join our existing team at the International Fire Training Centre. The purpose of the role is to provide efficient and effective caretaking support to the IFTC including ensuring the security and general appearance of the buildings and surrounding areas are maintained in accordance with the required standards and that building systems operate at optimum efficiency and safety.

Main Accountabilities

  • Testing, setting and responding to alarms across the site.
  • Monitor water safety (legionella control measures)
  • Overall security of the site (in liaison with external contractors)
  • Reading meters and calculating usage.
  • Undertake minor plumbing, decorating, joinery, labouring work as required.
  • Reporting damage, hazard and maintenance requirements to the Facilities Manager.
  • Winter gritting.
  • Waste disposal and emptying of waste.
  • Working with housekeeping (lifting, moving and disposing of items)
  • Offering occasional support to the Residential Services Team Leader
  • Carry out maintenance work across the site with emphasis on either/both joinery or/and plumbing works.
  • Work to Serco Permit, lockout/isolation and working at height procedures.
  • Adopt a safe working regime
  • Undertake PAT testing and maintain records of assets.
  • Carry out plumbing and joinery works as directed by Facilities Manager/Head of Compliance and Technical Services
  • Undertake refurbishment/cost saving projects as instructed
  • Carry out PPMs and report defects or concerns found while undertaking tasks.
  • Carry out other duties, within the scope of personal capabilities as directed by management.

  • Good Standard of Education
  • General maintenance skills.
  • Specific maintenance skills in joinery or plumbing.
  • Professional and positive working attitude
  • Experience in recording information on a computer
  • Competent in the use of basic computer skills ( Microsoft Excel and Word)
  • Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines and prioritise workloads
  • Ability to work as a part of a small team or on own and use own initiative
  • Ability to be flexible, adaptable and accommodating.
  • Maintenance experience.
  • Working knowledge of health and safety procedures and regulations, eg COSHH
  • Good communication skills
