Job summary
The full-time posts are 48 hours per week; this includes 4 hours of non-rostered time per week for CPD such as research, audits and quality improvement projects. The post holder will have limited on-call duties at the Level 1 MTC at RSCH and will therefore be expected to be up to date with the management of complex trauma. Possession of FRCS (T&O) and ATLS is a requirement for the post.
Main duties of the job
This job will be include elective and trauma practice within the hip unit at UHS (East). There will be a significant trauma component with at least one day spent in the Major Trauma Centre per week, attending Pelvic and Acetabular Surgery lists.
The post offers exposure to all aspects of primary hip arthroplasty, including the young adult, DDH, SUFE, Perthes and complex revision hip surgery in a tertiary hip unit.

UHS is a tertiary hip unit. Complex hip cases are referred in from other units in Sussex and occasionally Kent. There are 5 Substantive fellowship-trained revision hip surgeons practicing within the hip unit. Peri-acetabular osteotomy is not performed at UHS. There is a significant revision practice in UHS which varies from first revisions to Custom 3-d printed acetabular reconstructions. The hip unit has a highly effective MDT (Multi-Disciplinary Team) meeting every fortnight.
Brighton has been a Major Trauma Centre for over 10 years. Pelvic and Acetabular surgeons have approximately 2 lists per week in the MTC. The post holder will be offered lists here. The successful candidate will be expected to complete a research project and publication during their tenure.
Successful candidates will be expected to work at both the Princess Royal Hospital, PRH (Haywards Heath) and/or the Royal Sussex County Hospital, RSCH (Brighton).
PRH hosts our Hip Fracture Unit and our ring-fenced elective unit, the Sussex Orthopaedic Treatment Centre (SOTC). RSCH is a major trauma centre and teaching hospital. All hip fracture admissions are directed to PRH and managed in the hip fracture unit between our dedicated T&O surgical team and Orthogeriatric medical team. Successful candidates will work closely with both teams to manage this complex patient cohort in addition to elective patients treated at SOTC. There is a daily T&O consultant ward round and additional consultant orthogeriatric ward round most days of the week.
