Job summary

This post is for a surgeon who has had some experience of general surgery at least at SHO level, but preferably at registrar level. It is useful for surgeons who are awaiting a training post and need to increase their experience and also for those who are not planning a consultant career. It would also be suitable for overseas surgeons wishing to spend some time working within the UK health service. This job is not formally recognised for training, although there is an on-going commitment from the surgical department to career development.

Main duties of the job

  1. The normal working day consists of covering the General Surgical wards from 8am-5pm.
  2. You will be expected to actively participate in the management of the patients on the wards, outpatients, operating theatres and endoscopy. Your skills and acumen will be utilised in the investigation of patients, the formulation and execution of patient care plans as guided by your colleagues on the team. Ward rounds are daily.
  3. Your participation in operating theatre and day case sessions is required and recommended. You will be able to carry out operative procedures under consultant supervision and be involved in the perioperative care of patients.
  4. Your career development is important to us and study leave with a budget for appropriate courses is available in line with the other trainees.
  5. You will be supported and expected to participate in audits, research, teaching and service improvement schemes
  6. Participation in the registrar on-call rota.
  7. It is prospective cover and therefore you will cover other colleagues in their absence.
  8. Perform duties in the occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate Consultant in consultation, where practicable, with the doctor’s colleagues both senior and junior.
  9. The post-holder will undergo regular appraisal throughout the post and will be expected to undergo continuing professional development.
  10. You will work collaboratively with colleagues to further develop and improve the service.

About us

Herefordshire is an agricultural border county of outstanding natural beauty with agriculture being the main industry especially growing hops and cider apples. There is also some light industry. Hereford is a Cathedral city with a strong and vibrant tradition in the Arts, particularly music. It is surrounded by a number of small market towns, many of which have cottage hospitals where various clinics are held by the consultant staff from Hereford hospitals.

The County Hospital in Hereford serves a Herefordshire population in the region of 180,000. The area extends westwards well into mid Wales to enlarge the catchment population to about 230,000. This area is bounded in the north by the area served by the Shrewsbury hospitals, in the east by the Worcester and Gloucester hospitals and in the south and south west by hospitals in Abergavenny and Newport. There are good rail and road communications with Birmingham, Manchester, Cardiff and London.

The area enjoys good state education at junior and senior level, including a sixth form college. There are also a variety of good independent schools and Hereford has both Technical and Art Colleges.

We have a modern PFI hospital built in 2002 on the County Hospital site. There are presently 340 beds.
