Consultant Paediatric Respiratory Medicine

Applications are invited for a substantive consultant post in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine and Regional Lead for the Paediatric Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia service for the Midlands.

We are seeking a highly motivated,dynamic, & enthusiastic individual, to take on this full time (10-programmed activities) replacement substantive consultant post to lead the nationally commissioned central England primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) management service, & to support the paediatric respiratory medicine department. 50% of the job plan will be dedicated to delivering and supporting the PCD management service.

Leicester children’s hospital is one of four national centres for PCD management. The successful candidate will take on the clinical lead for this regional service, providing specialist advice, education, & support to health care professionals regionally and nationally. Applicants will be expected to hold a CCT in paediatric respiratory medicine.

The post holder will also join the existing clinical respiratory team in participating in all aspects of paediatric respiratory medicine. The inpatient service is based at the Leicester Children’s Hospital (on the Leicester Royal Infirmary site), where the successful candidate will share consultant duties as daytime consultant of the week (1 in 6)

Main duties of the job

To contribute to the provision of the paediatric respiratory service, including:

  • Clinical lead for the regional PCD management service for the Midlands
  • Tertiary paediatric respiratory outpatient clinics
  • Inpatient consultant cover for paediatric respiratory patients, and as part of the shared respiratory consultant of the week daytime rota (1 in 6; 0900 till 1700 Monday-Friday, 0900 till 1300 Weekends)
  • Paediatric flexible bronchoscopy
  • Promote and strengthen links with colleagues in the region (primary care and local district general hospitals) with a view to increasing formal outreach
  • Opportunities to develop further areas of subspecialty interest in areas of respiratory medicine which compliments the interests of the rest of the department
  • Successful candidates will be encouraged to participate with departmental research activity and develop their own areas of research interest

About us

University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust provides acute and specialist paediatric services for Leicester and the surrounding hospitals in the South East Midlands including: allergy, congenital heart disease, endocrinology, ENT, gastroenterology, haematology, neurology, NICU, oncology, paediatric surgery, PICU, and respiratory medicine.

The paediatric respiratory service is a vibrant, proactive, and cohesive team comprising of 6 NHS consultants, 1 academic associate professor, 1 CF fellow, 1 asthma research fellow, 1 GRID trainee, and 8 respiratory specialist nurses.

Working as a multidisciplinary team, we provide care for children with difficult asthma, cystic fibrosis, airway and sleep disorders, complex and rare respiratory disorders, children with non-CF bronchiectasis, and have a close working relationship with the East Midlands Congenital Heart Centre. We also provide care for children on long term invasive and non-invasive home ventilation, and host one of only three diagnostic centres for primary ciliary dyskinesia in the UK.

Our newly refurbished paediatric investigation unit provides a comprehensive diagnostic service including bronchial challenge testing, plethysmography, respiratory polysomnography, home oximetry and capnography, multiple breath nitrogen washout and induced sputum testing. The paediatric flexible bronchoscopy service comprises of regular planned theatre lists, joint bronchoscopies and MLBs with ENT.
