Job summary

The job plan and on call rota have been designed to prioritise both the welfare of our patients and of our Consultants, improve work life balance and allow for flexibility as Consultants progress through their careers. We hope to attract applications from both new and established Consultants. We will support applications from Consultants wishing to work flexibly and/or less than full time.

Main duties of the job

All of the predictable and unpredictable DCC work of this post is annualised. In addition to the Critical Care on-call commitment, the successful applicant’s job plan will consist of a flexible number of clinical sessions per week for their allied specialty to an agreed annualised total. The example shown below is for a 10 PA contract (8.5 DCC and 1.5 SPA). The exact job plan will be agreed with the post-holder, Critical Care and allied specialty on appointment.

The on call rota is published for the entire year allowing flexibility with the allied specialty rota. Fixed non-clinical days may be negotiated with the base specialty department.

The Critical Care on-call commitment is based around four weeks in twelve (see figure below for 10PA contract example).

Week 1: four 8am-6pm day shifts (Monday to Thursday).

Weeks 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, 11 and 12: a combination of your Allied Specialty and daytime second on Consultant for Critical Care sessions (4-8 sessions per week depending on job plan).

Week 4: three alternate nights on-call (5pm-10pm resident then 10pm-8am on-call from home).

Week 8: three 8am-6pm day shifts (Friday, Saturday and Sunday).

Week 10: four alternate nights on call (5pm-10pm resident, then 10pm-8am on-call)
