Job summary

Through strong clinical leadership and effective management, the Matron will support the Unit and Team Leaders to promote and deliver excellence in nursing and midwifery care maintaining and continually improve clinical standards evidenced by achievement of key quality performance indicators.

To have local open and transparent communication channels that support the ward team to do the right thing for patients, to be bold when they have good ideas and to speak up when things go wrong to ensure learning and quality improvement.

To oversee the delivery of high quality, safe and effective nursing or midwifery care focused on improving outcomes and experiences for patients, families and carers and effectively managing risk

As a key member of a multi professional team, ensure appropriate referral and discussion with other members of the team to optimise patient care.

Work in collaboration with the Divisional Director of Nursing/Assistant Divisional Director of Nursing providing a strong professional voice and effective contribution to the business agenda

The jobholder will contribute to Matrons’ development plan-Trust; this will include participation in Trust-wide Matron’s initiatives, such as Matrons’ Quality Rounds, Trust Accreditation Schemes (COAST) and other development initiatives as required. As part of professional development, the jobholder may be asked to deputise for the Assistant Divisional Director of Nursing as and when as required.

Main duties of the job

The Matron’s key responsibility is to ensure that the patient experience is of the highest quality inspiring patient and public confidence. This will be achieved through high visibility, accessibility and surveillance.

The jobholder will ensure that all patients are treated with compassion, dignity and respect placing value on the diversity of the local community and beyond. He/she will promote best practice in Infection Prevention through ensuring a clean and safe environment.
