We invite applications for the post of Locum Consultant Anaesthetist specialising in anaesthesia for Neurosurgery at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. This post is to cover sabbatical leave.

This is an exciting opportunity for an Anaesthetist with an interest in Neuroanaesthesia to join our friendly and dynamic Neuroanaesthesia Group. UHB is home to one of the biggest neuroscience departments in the UK with our Neuroanaesthesia Group providing perioperative care for a wide range of complex cranial, spinal and neurovascular procedures across 5 theatres. We have a dedicated on call rota covering neurosurgical emergencies and contributes to the mechanical thrombectomy service. The job plan includes sessions in other specialties.

Main duties of the job

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital is one of the biggest neuroscience departments in the UK. As a result, the Neuroanaesthesia group provide perioperative care for a wide range of complex cranial, spinal and neurovascular procedures. Cranial work includes craniotomies for supratentorial and posterior fossa tumours, functional, and base of skull neurosurgery. There is an established awake craniotomy service. Spinal operations include spinal oncology, spinal deformity work and thoracic work requiring one lung ventilation. We have a dedicated Neuroangio suite treating complex aneurysms/AVMs and offering a 24/7 mechanical thrombectomy service.

There is a weekly consultant delivered high risk pre assessment clinic. There is anaesthetic representation at Neurosurgical morbidity & mortality meetings and MDTs. We manage Neurosurgical patients on the new QEHB 8 bedded EPOC.

The post holder must understand the significant ongoing changes in the Trust’s services and be prepared to take an active part in the change program.

We have included a suggested job plan in Appendix 1, but the successful candidate will be invited to discuss these options with the Clinical Lead and Divisional Director on appointment.

There are a total of 10 PAs within the job with the expectation that the core component of Neuroanaesthesia will not be changed. The other sessions may be open to change to accommodate individual preferences, and we encourage applicants to discuss this with us. As indicated from the breadth of our clinical interest, we have a wide variety of sessions available

Any changes to the job plan must be first discussed and agreed with the Divisional management.
