Job summary

We are looking to recruit a Band 4 Nurse Associate for Bath Centre for Pain Services (BCPS).

The Chronic Pain Specialty in the Royal United Hospital, Bath is one of the largest in the UK and provides care for patients both locally and nationally. Bath Centre for Pain Services is a national specialist Service based in Bernard Ireland House working with people with complex chronic (persistent) pain and associated pain disability. The Nurse Associate role will be part of the specialist BCPS team and training will be provided. This roles is unique and will be an interesting career development for people looking for a great challenge. BCPS is located in Bernard Ireland House (BIH) at the RUH and includes therapy & accommodation for the patients accessing specialist complex pain rehabilitation programmes staying for 1-4 weeks. BCPS rehabilitation therapy & accommodation is modelled on a home environment rather than that of a hospital ward in order to reflect the self-managing ethos towards independence for our patients. Please note the accommodation is not a ward and we do not undertake any medical/ nursing treatments or interventions. We support our patients using a psychology model helping them get back to living life with their pain and pain related disability.

We are looking for a full-time person but would consider a job share or part time hours for the appropriate candidate.

Main duties of the job

Your responsibilities will include involvement in specialist pain rehabilitation therapy, supporting our patients with personal care and activities of daily living, taking part in patient sessions by assisting clinicians as well as maintaining smooth running of the admission process, accommodation and psychology based therapy. You will be supporting the pain specialty patients in really making a difference to their independence in the presence of pain & distress which is challenging for many of our patients on a day-to-day basis. You’ll help provide emotional support to both our patients and the people that are close to them, assist in providing management of behaviour techniques and deliver the best care possible to our patients who have significant pain and pain associated disabilities. You will be expected to take part in sessions joining in with the therapy such as attending the gym, going into town, taking part in exercises etc.

You will also act as a role model for the BIH HCA team and be willing to take part in the pain specialty rehabilitation model, manage high levels of distress and physical disability as well as associated mental/psychological distress.

If you’d like to understand more about this unique role, I would welcome an informal discussion. Please do contact me, Karen Draper (Lead Nurse) either by telephone 01225 821181, or by email karen.draper1@nhs.net if this is something you would like to do.
