The Whipps Cross Dietetic team are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic Band 5 dietitian to join our innovative department in this supervised rotational post

Rotation 1: includes critical care experience with supervision

Rotation 2: includes gastroenterology experience with supervision

This position will give you a solid foundation from which you can build your career in most areas of acute dietetics. You will be working in a friendly team alongside both senior and experienced dietitians and support workers within the hospital and be able to access knowledge from the wider team of dietitians across Barts Health. This, along with regular supervision, close multidisciplinary working and peer learning will allow you to build on your confidence and skills in the inpatient setting.

Clinical specialities to learn about within the Whipps Cross team include parenteral nutrition, critical care, gastroenterology, surgery, medicine, oncology, older people’s medicine, stroke and diabetes.

Applicants must possess excellent communication and organisational skills in this busy role. The post holder will be required to travel to other sites across Barts Health on occasion for team development meetings and very occasionally to work. Some experience would be beneficial but not essential in succeeding in your application to this post.

Main duties of the job

To work together with the dietetic team to provide an effective dietetic service to adult in-patients at Whipps Cross Hospital. To ensure that research and audit is undertaken on a regular basis in order to ensure practice is evidence based. This post will have a requirement to work on any adult ward and may be required to work across or attend meetings on any of the sites within Barts Health on request.

  • To work independently using frameworks and protocols and guidance and support of other senior dietetic colleagues, to ensure effective and safe practice.
  • To manage and prioritise workload in a number of settings and to update line manager of any service changes.
  • To be involved in training of health care professionals where appropriate and where gaps of poor practice have been identified.
  • To work as a member of the Dietetic Department. Developing projects in line with the Department objectives and relevant strategic plans.
  • To attend and contribute to monthly departmental meetings and continued professional development meetings i.e. presenting at audit and journal club.
  • To be responsible for providing highly specialised advice to clients within a particular speciality including nutritional assessment, dietary counselling, motivational interviewing, negotiating targets, developing care plans and communicating these with relevant health and other care agencies. This may be on a one to one basis or to groups.
  • To be an active member of dietetic department and to attend MDT meetings and/or ward rounds as appropriate.
  • To provide nutrition counselling, using advocacy services when appropriate, to communicate with the diverse multicultural population as well as other populations where there are barriers to communication.
  • Planning, organisation and delivery of education and clinical updating on dietetic practices of medical, nursing and support staff including dietetic staff & students.
  • To maintain an up-to-date knowledge of research findings and new practices within nutrition and dietetics, and apply this knowledge to improve practice.
  • To assist in the development of nutritional education materials in collaboration with other dietitians which must be evidence based taking into consideration barriers to communication e.g. translating evidence based complex nutritional messages into simple messages for the general public; addressing barriers to understanding within, particularly social, cultural, religious, language and economic barriers to health.
  • To undertake research and audit within the department as appropriate, and present findings to dietetic and/or clinical teams.
  • To contribute or lead on projects being undertaken by the dietetic or wider multidisciplinary team
  • To be responsible for planning and organising continuing care for patients, in the community, this may include the arranging of complex packages of care e.g. Home Enteral feeding. This includes liaising with community nursing/medical teams, patients and carers as well as companies and manufacturers.
  • To be responsible for commenting, implementing and proposing changes to policies and procedures in own area of work. Ensuring policy/procedure developments are appropriately implemented.
  • Engage in Nutritional health promotion that includes needs assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of work/ projects.
  • Act as resource point of advice/ support for others within the MDT.
  • To cover part of the workload of other dietitians during leave of absence if required.
