I am currently assisting a leading University in recruiting a Regulatory Compliance Manager to assist with the following responsibilities.

Salary: £32-40,000

Job Purpose

Chemicals: To be the key individual responsible for developing and managing systems for assurance and
compliance in relation to various aspects of chemical usage, waste management, export controls,
National Security and Investment Act and other key areas of compliance. To provide a web content,
e-learning development and project management support service to colleagues across Compliance
& Risk.

Imports: To develop and manage systems for the assurance of compliance with the requirements of import
regulations, including: firearms and ammunition, certain plants, seeds and soil, animal products, certain controlled drugs and medicines.

Biological Material: To develop and manage systems for the assurance of compliance with the requirements of the
Environment Agency, in relation to the pre-acceptance audit for biological waste management.

Responsibilities across Compliance and Risk

While reporting directly to the Regulatory Compliance Manager the postholder will also play a role
across the whole of Compliance and Risk. This will involve the provision of underpinning knowledge,
skills and training across Compliance and Risk in relation to web content development, project
management (specifically MS Project use) and e-learning.

Key Responsibilities

To develop and manage systems for the assurance of compliance with the requirements of the Home
Office and other government departments in relation to chemical use in research and
teaching.

Desirable criteria

  • University degree and/or substantial university professional experience with complex admin processes.
  • A degree in chemistry or engineering (preferred) or a life/physical science
  • Education and/or certifications in export compliance.
  • An analytical mind-set and attention to detail are essential for this role.
  • Excellent organisational, administrative and communication skills (oral and written)
  • The ability to make independent decisions, demonstrate good problem solving, negotiating and mediation skills.
  • Work independently with moderate guidance and as part of a team. Highly developed IT skills (inc. MS Project and web authoring)
  • Relevant work experience
  • Knowledge of the academic research environment
  • Awareness of the legislation and regulations associated with the safe procurement, management and disposal of regulated substances, including the DGSA role, trade compliance and governance issues.
  • Experience of briefing senior managers and reporting to senior staff/committees in an accurate and succinct manner
  • Ability to prioritise workloads and meet externally imposed deadlines
  • Be able to work flexibly under pressure
  • Awareness of legislation and regulations associated with the use of chemicals in research
  • A willingness to undertake the DGSA qualification
  • A willingness to undertake training to fill any gaps in knowledge and experience
