Laing O’Rourke has a requirement for a permanent Section Engineer to join our Olympia team. Are you an engineering professional who wants to develop your career? Do you have a desire to improve your engineering competency? Then the role at Olympia can support your development.

Laing O’Rourke is delivering the £600M redevelopment of London’s Olympia Exhibition Centre, which includes the listed Grand Hall and National Hall.

The work to create Future Olympia includes the redevelopment of the existing listed exhibition halls – the Grand Hall and the National Hall – and the creation of new offices, a four-screen cinema, a 4,000-seat music venue, a 1,500-seat theatre, two new hotels, new retail outlets and public realm space. All of this will be delivered while allowing the exhibition areas to remain operational and revenue generating.

The role has a variety of tasks and operates a self-delivery model rather than subcontractor reliance.

Roles / Responsibilities:

  • Supporting the development of designs, planning and costing
  • Drafting scopes under NRSWA for the mitigation, which include coordination of subcontractors and agreeing the works.
  • Coordination of site and construction works, in regard to logistic and programme planning.
  • Provide accurate dimensional control, and check that established by others, to enable the works to be constructed to the required tolerances as defined by the Contract / design documents. Carry out surveys for design, as-built and payment purposes.
  • Assist site foremen and managers in supervising site operatives and sub-contractors ensuring that the works are constructed in accordance with design drawings, specifications and standards as defined by the contract documents.
  • Produce method statements and risk assessments to be approved by supervising engineers / managers and ensure that site operations take place in accordance with documents which detail safe systems of work, e.g. method statements, task sheets and procedures.

The type of knowledge that will help you thrive in the role or add to your skill set include:

  • Enabling works through to delivery of structures
  • Civil engineering degree or similar practical experience
  • Knowledge of self-delivery
  • Understanding of offsite manufacturing
  • Basic understanding of BIM
  • Commercial awareness
  • Competent with Microsoft packages especially Word, Excel and PowerPoint
