DfMA Bridge Engineer – Technology & Innovation

Remote working – required to attend meetings on-site, as well as Laing O’Rourke offices.

Laing O’Rourke wishes to appoint a Civil Engineer to the Technology & Innovation team, as part of the wider Technical Function. The roles will report to our Principal Engineer & Lead Digital Engineer with key interfaces across the company and beyond:

Key stakeholders in Expanded, Explore, the core Laing O’Rourke operating businesses, project teams as well as clients, external consultants, research bodies, institutions, and academic partners.

What will the role look like?

The role will focus on supporting the development of the Digital Bridges Toolkit and the associated library of off-site manufactured bridge products.

The candidate will be expected to contribute to, and lead packages of work that will improve, enhance and expand the current library of bridge products, leading to an increase in the range of bridges that can be manufactured and delivered by LOR.

What skills & experience are we looking for?

Examples of the activities that will be required as part of this role:

  • Leading workshops with project teams and our internal business units to capture lessons learned about the deployment of our existing bridge products, identifying where improvements/enhancements are required, and where new products/processes are required.
  • Working with bid teams during the tender phase to generate modular bridge solutions for new road/rail schemes.
  • Working with project teams during ECI/preliminary design/detailed design to embed LOR’s modular bridge product set into the design.
  • Develop relationships with external supply chain partners to understand how their products can be integrated with LOR’s modular bridge product set
  • Lead R&D workstreams to develop the engineering, manufacturing, transport, craneage and assembly requirements for new products/materials leading to physical trials and testing.
  • Capture the physical geometry, engineering design requirements, manufacturing and assembly constraints etc. of new products and translate these into digitally explicit rules/data to be incorporated into the Digital Bridges Toolkit
  • Become an expert driver of the Digital Bridges Toolkit to support project teams during optioneering phases and deliver models/drawings and costing outputs as required by the team.
  • Work closely and collaboratively within a small but extremely enthusiastic and driven research and development team.
  • Is passionate about developing sustainable solutions and supporting LORs vision to decarbonise construction.
  • Presenting at industry conferences & events

Core skills required

  • Civil Engineering design knowledge and experience in designing with concrete and steel.
  • Experienced in the design of new bridge structures with knowledge of Network Rail & National Highways standards.
  • Understands manufacturing and construction processes associated with both traditional in-situ construction and offsite manufacturing methods of delivery.
  • Has experience in using CAD packages and is keen to extend their learning in this area. (Solidworks and Driveworks training to be provided)

  • Presentation, communication & writing skills

Desirable skills

  • Has knowledge of, or is keen to learn about data structuring, SQL relational databases and digital workflows etc.
  • Ability to use Software Analysis packages e.g. LUSAS/SOFiSTiK/MIDAS, to analyse bridges and develop/test new bridge components
  • Professionally qualified / chartered by a recognised body
