We’re looking for an exceptional Junior Database Administrator to help us make a difference to our planet.

Our Junior Database Administrator will work a hybrid pattern of homeworking and 3 days per week in Exeter HQ.

As our Junior Database Administrator, your total reward package is potentially worth up to £36500.00 annually, which includes basic salary, market supplement, potential corporate bonus and employer pension contributions.

Your starting salary will be £24146.00 and you will have opportunities to progress to £26641.00 over time. New joiners to the Met Office will start on the salary band minima.

In addition you will be paid £2500.00 per annum as a market supplement to reflect the demand for your skills. You will be paid this market driven allowance from April 2022 until March 2024 in your monthly pay whilst performing this role.

Job Responsibilities

As our Junior Database Administrator, the key duties are:

  • Service Support:
    • Maintaining and monitoring the services. Assist with the delivery of effective and adaptable database administration services, ensuring both operationally and non-operationally supported databases meet project and/ or customer expectations.
    • Assist with installation, upgrade and configuration tasks, maintenance of system security, perform back-up and recovery procedures in line with agreed best practice to deliver and maintain efficient and reliable databases.
    • Involvement in diagnosing and resolving database problems, including using database management tools, to meet the agreed service levels.
    • Getting a thorough understanding of effective Change, Incident & Problem Management.
    • Proactively addressing issues which have a wider impact on service delivery.
    • Maintaining procedures and other documentation for colleagues, other support teams, users, IT Operations and customers.
  • Workload Management:
    • Following local best-practice and/ or guidelines, involvement in peer reviews of work undertaken and reviewing the documentation as necessary.
  • Team Working:
    • Work effectively and help to contribute to the success of the Corporate Database Team. Suggest areas for enhancement to monitor and drive continuous improvement.
    • Gain an understanding of complex technical information, enabling concise communication to non technical specialists including business colleagues and customers.
    • Gain an understanding of services & projects and carrying out activities to improve the services offered.

Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities

  1. Candidates must demonstrate a basic understanding of database technology, ideally Oracle version 12 and/ or 19 or PostgreSQL version 9 and above.
  2. Great team-working skills and, when appropriate, the ability and enthusiasm to work on your own initiative.
  3. Ability to create and maintain working relationships with other teams at any level as cross team co-operation is essential for successful service delivery.
  4. Capacity to follow, update and produce documentation to support troubleshooting and various other daily tasks for colleagues to follow, together with enthusiasm for “show and tell”.
  5. An enthusiasm to deliver, get involved and take ownership of issues.

Desirable Qualifications, Skills & Abilities

  1. Programming with Oracle PL/ SQL or Postgres PL/ pgSQL
  2. An understanding of/ capability with linux.

We operate an on-call roster in Technology to provide 24/ 7/ 365 support to respond to operational service requirements. This post may be part of an on-call roster and the postholder would be required to participate in an on-call roster where in operation. GOLD
