Main duties of the job

The Occupational Therapists will focus on development of strategies, skills, habits and routines to enable service users to live well with their condition and foster functional independence. The OPMH crisis support Occupational Therapy service will provide cover across a 7-day week, acting within a spectrum of OPMH services. The successful candidates will create processes and pathways to compliment the Occupational Therapy provision within primary care, the general hospital home first and D2RA teams, psychiatric liaison, memory assessment services, OPMH community teams and inpatient units. You will be a team player and be committed to excellence in seeking the most robust models of intervention to enhance functional independence and quality of life. You will be responsible for supervision and development of junior staff and be required to take Occupational Therapy students on practice education placements.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

We offer a proactive, BCUHB wide, mental health Occupational Therapy team who work together to develop clinical skills and effectiveness across the older persons mental health Occupational Therapy pathway. We seek to expand the mental health Occupational Therapy provision across all three areas of BCUHB by evaluating service provision, developing business cases and running pilots. The Occupational Therapy service is committed to lifelong learning and evidenced based practice. All staff receive support and encouragement to utilise continuing professional development (CPD) and to maintain a CPD portfolio.

This new service will seek to provide early assessment and intervention to help prevent or avert crises associated with OPMH issues and cognitive deficit, and will contribute to the discharge to recover and assess (D2RA) supported turnaround at the hospital front door. The role will include; detailed liaison with and education of care providers, including families and care homes; holistic assessment of strengths and needs, supports, and the environmental context; and risk based occupational formulation with a view to identifying appropriate services, supports and strategies. In addition, the Occupational Therapists will provide preventative interventions, through post diagnostic support where this is required, in order to embed coping, self-management strategies and supports to prevent crises occurring. Essential criteria

  • Degree or equivalent in Occupational Therapy
  • HCPC Registration
  • Desirable criteria

  • Short courses at post graduate diploma level
  • Experience

  • Significant post graduate experience with demonstrable experience in related clinical field
  • Experience of contributing to service development
