The Science Museum Group (SMG) is the largest and most complex museum estate in the country which also houses a scientific collection of international significance.

The Estate Operations team has responsibility for ensuring that the SMG Estate meets all legislative and operational requirements, is consistently well maintained, efficiently run and delivers an excellent customer experience to staff and visitors alike.

In addition to overseeing the maintenance of building assets both historic and new, there is also a significant role for the team in ensuring full integration with Masterplan and Capital projects across the portfolio and to sustain those new developments once project delivery is completed.


About the role

‘Resilience’ derived from the Estate is a strategic priority for SMG and this special period ahead will see significant investment made which builds on the standout developments already achieved and further conserves and expands on an incredible portfolio of building assets across six sites, each with their own unique challenges and opportunities.

To achieve this transformation, we are developing the Estate structure to ensure that we can deliver a professional and sustainable Estate Management function for years ahead. As a part of this we are looking for 2 Senior Estates Managers – One responsible for our National Railway Museum, York and Locomotion in Shildon, the other post to lead activity at our Science and Industry Museum, Manchester and oversee our National Collections Centre near Swindon.

You will be accountable for the compliant management of your site, managing the delivery of your local Estate team and outsourced maintenance services to meet the needs of the business. You will act as a source of support and guidance for other team members, leading where issues are escalated to you and driving the performance of the service at your site.

Both positions offer a hybrid working pattern, with home working on offer as well as a regular presence at your base site. We are keen to explore flexibility with the successful candidates and any other arrangements can be discussed at interview.

About you

We are open to how you have gain and developed your career in Facilities Management and hard services thus far.

You will have strong professional knowledge in Estates/Facilities Manager, building services, built environments or a related fields, with good technical and regulatory understanding and the risks associated with estate management to not only lead with advice but also to impart onto a team. Accustomed to managing contractor/supplier performance on a range of contracts, you also have working knowledge of building construction, materials, M&E systems and fabric.

With the ability to lead and manage a team, you are an excellent communicator with strong interpersonal and influencing skills. You can strike a balance between providing strategic direction, whilst lending a hand to operational activity should the need arise. Keen to bring your team along with your success, you are willing to share your expertise and practical experience.
