A position exists, for a Research Assistant/Associate in the Department of Engineering, to work on Biologically Inspired Robotics.

The post holder will be located in Central Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK.

The post holder is expected to work on a HFSP funded project on The Walking Fish: Integrating biomechanics, energetics and robotics to study water-land transition. The Walking Fish project aims to develop and analyse bio-inspired robot platforms similar to the biological walking fish, that is regarded as the key to uncover the water-land transition of biological systems in the evolutionary context. Based on the theoretical and technological bases of bio-inspired soft robotics, we aim to develop robotic platforms that can demonstrate the basic functionalities and advantages of walking and swimming underwater. For these purposes, the post holder is expected to conduct investigations and development of soft robot platforms as well as dissemination of achievements through various communication channels. There will be collaboration with project partners and students which require smooth communication and teamwork.

The skills, qualifications and experience required to perform the role are a first degree in a relevant discipline and a PhD degree (or about to be awarded a PhD degree) in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, biomechanics, or a related area. Expertise is sought in one or more of the following areas: biologically inspired robotics, soft robotics, modelling and simulation of biological systems, soft matter modelling and analysis. Experience of rapid prototyping is also required.

Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD. Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded.

Salary Ranges:
Research Assistant: £27,116 – £31,406
Research Associate: £33,309 – £40,927

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 24 months in the first instance.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment.
