We welcome interest from HCPC registered Clinical Psychologists for a full-time Principal Clinical Psychologist post in the Clinical Health Psychology Service. The post holder will have operational day to day and professional line management by the Consultant Clinical Psychologist/Lead for Clinical Health Psychology, as an employee of the NHS Ayrshire & Arrans Psychological Service. The Psychological Service has approximately 100 staff and delivers area-wide psychological provision through the Professional Lead for Psychological Services, two Heads of Specialty and Consultant Psychology Leads across the Psychological Specialties. The Clinical Health Psychology service consists of a number of Clinical Psychologists, each linked to an acute medical specialty: Cardiac, Oncology, Pain, Bariatric, Weight Management, ICU and General Medicine. Within each of these acute specialist areas the Psychologist is an integral part of a multi-disciplinary team consisting of Nursing, Medical and Allied Health Professionals.

The post is professionally aligned to the Clinical Health Psychology Service and will sit clinically within the General Medicine Psychology Service and the Specialist Pain Management Service. The General Medicine Psychology Service works with a number of acute teams and receives referrals from a number of services including, but not limited to, cardiology, respiratory, gastroenterology, diabetes and endocrinology. An integral part of this post will be to support the Specialist Pain Management Service to re-establish the Pain Management Programme in NHS Ayrshire & Arran and a part of this role will be for development and delivery of the Pain Management Programme. 

You will provide a specialised clinical psychology service to clients of the Clinical Health Psychology Service; providing highly specialist psychological and neuro-psychological assessment and short to medium term therapy at the same time as offering advice and consultation on clients psychological care to non-psychologist colleagues and to other, non-professional carers; working autonomously within professional guidelines and the overall framework of the services policies and procedures. You will utilise research skills for audit, policy and service development and research within the area served by the team/service and provide clinical and professional supervision to other psychologists or trainees undertaking Doctoral training. You will undertake service development which may have an impact beyond own area of practice. You will provide training and supervision/coaching in the use of psychologically informed approaches within the wider MDT. You will work closely with the Consultant Clinical Psychologist within Clinical Health Psychology, the Senior Principal Clinical Psychologist and the Clinical Leads of the Pain Service.

The current post is full-time Band 8a (10 sessions a week), however a variation in contracted hours would be considered (minimum 6 sessions per week). Previous experience working in medical settings and/or working with pain patients/patients with Long Term Conditions would be preferred but we would welcome discussions about relevant transferrable experiences. This post will be based in Ayrshire Central Hospital but you will be required to work flexibly with the general medicine and the specialist pain management service, which are pan-Ayrshire, and a degree of travelling may be required – a car driver is preferred.
