This is a bold new initiative to improve the health of people in Scotland by developing and enhancing local and national expertise in the area of dental public health. You will be working across primary care and will be concerned with prevention, maximising population benefits and reducing health inequalities, while meeting the needs of individuals and groups. You will do this by prioritising available resources, by preventing diseases and by improving population oral health through design, access, utilisation and effectiveness.
This is a joint post between Public Health Scotland and NHS Dumfries & Galloway. The substantive employer will be Public Health Scotland, with an SLA with NHS Dumfries & Galloway. There will be joint agreement of objectives and job planning between PHS and NHS D&G.
Public Health Scotland is a new organisation between the Scottish Government and Local Government, working in partnership, to provide leadership to improve and protect the health and wellbeing of the people of Scotland.
Public Health Scotland launched 1st April 2020 with the formal status of a National Special Health Board employing around 1100 people, and with an annual budget of around £60 million, Public Health Scotland will provide authoritative information and services to support people and communities across Scotland. It will lead the national response to unforeseen health emergencies and will contribute to national and local government policy through its provision of robust data and intelligence.
NHS Dumfries and Galloway is one of 14 territorial health boards providing NHS services across Scotland. It employs approximately 4,600 members of staff and provides services to a population of approximately 150,000 across a large geographical area in the South west of Scotland. The Public Health Directorate leads on Health Protection, Vaccinations, Screening Programmes, Strategic Health Improvement and hosts the Alcohol and Drugs Partnership. We also work collaboratively with our colleagues in Health and Social Care to support delivery of safe, effective and person centred care for our population. As a Directorate we are dedicated to protecting and improving the health of the local population. We are looking for a Consultant in Dental Public Health to provide clinical and public health leadership to improve population oral health and the quality of dental services across Scotland, to enable policy and strategy creation for the delivery of key public health goals.
This post holder will provide Consultant level expert leadership for Dental Public Health across NHS Dumfries and Galloway, and work collaboratively with the NHS Boards Director of Dentistry to support local delivery of safe, effective and high quality NHS dental services and improved oral health for the local population.
You will be focussed on transforming Scotlands public health system, through effective working relationships with stakeholders such as NHS Scotland, Scottish Government and partner organisations.
The post holder must be registered on the Specialist Register of the Dental Council in Public Health.
The post will report directly to the PHS Head of Clinical and Public Health Intelligence & Research; and Director of Public Health NHS Dumfries & Galloway, but will also work very closely to NHS D&Gs Director of Dentistry.
The successful candidate will be required to undergo a PVG Scheme Disclosure Scotland check. Any candidate who has lived/worked overseas for more than 12 months in the preceding 5 years will also be required to provide a criminal record check from the appropriate overseas agency.
Candidates must have current GDC registration at the time of applying.
During times of public health emergency (the ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic) or other urgent business need you may be required on a temporary basis to work your normal contracted working hours over 7 days including weekends, in order to meet the needs of the service,
