Are you an engineer with materials knowledge and the passion to make a real difference in Defence? We are looking for engineers to help us ensure the equipment our Armed Forces use is safe, well maintained and that we are embracing new ways of working, seeking better alternative materials for our equipment.

The Quality, Safety and Environmental Protection (QSEP) Team report to the Director of Engineering and Safety. The team provides Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) with the policy advice, guidance and tools needed to enable DE&S to effectively and efficiently manage safety and environmental protection. As a member of this team, you will be empowered to influence policy and strive for improvements in the way we protect our Armed Forces, civil servants, the supply chain and MOD (Ministry of Defence) sites from risk due to hazardous materials. We are looking for a skilled Materials Engineer who has detailed specialist Hazardous Materials knowledge. You will be providing advice to DE&S Executive Committees and liaising with stakeholders across Defence. Part of a small team, you will generate, review and update hazardous materials policy on behalf of DE&S.

Responsibilities

Your responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

* Providing up-to-date advice and guidance to DE&S delivery teams and senior managers on restricted materials legislation, MOD policy and legal frameworks.

* Developing and maintaining HazMat regulations and guidance, assessing the regulatory and legal impacts such as staffing requests for defence exemptions from REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) regulation on behalf of the MOD.

* Attending the quarterly Hazardous Materials Stakeholder Groups, providing regular assurance reports on key HazMat issues to the DE&S executive and external regulators and working with multiple contracts across hazmat and noise and vibration.

Additionally, this role will provide an excellent opportunity to gain an appreciation of how changes in legislation could affect military capability.

What you will be assessed against

To be successful with your application you must demonstrate that you meet the following essential criteria:

* A graduate-level (or above) qualification in a relevant discipline.
* Experience / knowledge of hazardous materials and legislation such as REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals), POPs (Persistent Organic Pollutants), CLP (Classification, Labelling & Packaging) and RoHS (Restriction on the use of certain Hazardous Substances).
* Experience of providing technical advice and delivery of successful engineering/scientific outcomes.
* An excellent level of stakeholder management and communication skills .
