The Role

Southern Counties Veterinary Specialists have an exciting ECVAA Anaesthesia Residency, where you will join our friendly and supportive team of 2 ECVAA Diplomates, 2 Residency trained Clinicians, 4 ECVAA Residents, 2 Anaesthesia Interns and 6 Anaesthesia Nurses.

The position involves primary anaesthetic responsibility (under supervision) for patients undergoing complex soft tissue surgery, minimally invasive and interventional procedures, orthopaedic surgery, neurosurgery (spine and brain surgery), and advanced diagnostic procedures, with MRI and CT both on site. You will also have some involvement in the care of patients within ICU and participate in a 1 in 4 out of hours anaesthesia rota.

The position is for 3-4 years and will follow an Alternate Track Programme, involving externships at other ECVAA Approved Centres, supervised by other ECVAA or ACVAA Diplomates. Generous financial support is available for externship travel and accommodation and conference attendance. 

About Us

SCVS is a busy, multi-disciplinary referral practice in the heart of the New Forest, Hampshire, with Specialists in Soft Tissue and Orthopaedic Surgery, Internal Medicine, Neurology, Oncology, Cardiology, Dermatology and Diagnostic Imaging.

The anaesthesia service is active in clinical research and has numerous projects currently underway. Anaesthetic facilities include neuromuscular monitoring, dedicated ultrasound and electrolocation for loco-regional anaesthesia, complete physiological monitoring including MRI compatible monitoring, digital ventilators and recently upgraded practice-wide infusion equipment.

The practice is currently undergoing a £7.5 million state-of-the-art redevelopment, with a new surgical complex opening October 2022 and imaging facility in 2023.

SCVS is close to Southampton and Bournemouth, both with international airports and easy access to London. Bournemouth and Poole have numerous Blue Flag beaches, and the neighbouring county of Dorset is home to the world-famous Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. The New Forest offers 70,000 acres of cycling, horse-riding and hiking amongst the native ponies and free-ranging livestock.

Applicant Requirements

The ideal candidate will have a passion for anaesthesia, work well within a multi-disciplinary environment, and be registered, or eligible to register, with the MRCVS. Candidates must have at least 12 months experience, either in general practice, or a rotating internship, as well as a good standard of spoken and written English.
