This Clinical Fellow post and Research Fellow post are based at Barts Heart Centre (BHC), Barts Health NHS Trust. There is a requirement for some on call duties at the BHC.

Barts Heart Centre has been formed from the merged cardiac units which were previously based at The London Chest Hospital, St. Bartholomew’s Hospital and The Heart Hospital. It is the heart attack centre for the region and also provides invasive and interventional cardiology services, specialist cardiac imaging, electrophysiology services including device implants and ablation therapy for arrhythmia, grown up congenital heart disease, heart muscle disease, infective endocarditis, advanced heart failure services and cardio- oncology. These posts therefore provide exposure to a wide variety of cardiology and medical conditions. The Arrhythmia services department is one of the largest in the world, with the highest volume of EP and devices cases nationally and leading in several sub-specialty areas. The department is an internationally leading academic centre and publishes in most areas of EP and devices.

Main duties of the job

The main responsibilities are:

  1. To support cardiac EP and device services. This will include supervising and performing procedures in the catheter lab, participating in cardiac device clinic, outpatient clinics, reporting studies on patients, maintaining patient safety at all times and assisting in the smooth running of the department.
  2. To provide, as part of the rota for cardiac electrophysiology and specialised services, day-to- day care for inpatients for these
  3. Support to develop a sub-specialist interest within EP and cardiac devices
  4. There is a partial shift non resident on call for the above inpatient services at Barts Heart Centre. This involves out of hours work and weekend work. The rota is compliant with the European Working Time Directive. On call participation is based on the experience of the candidate and the overall needs of the cardiology services at Barts Heart Centre.

The posts would be suitable for cardiology trainees who are advanced in their training or who have completed their CCT in cardiology (or equivalent). Candidates should already have some experience in cardiac devices and wish to gain further advanced training. The ideal candidate would have good basic competence in devices and be looking to gain further sub-specialty experience whilst maintaining their skills. MCRP (or equivalent) is essential and prior research experience and ideally research doctorate desirable. The department will make every effort to help suitable candidates progress with further training in all areas of advanced devices CRT, Interventional devices with Worley kit, venoplasty and snaring, S-ICDs, leadless pacing, extraction, pacing in GUCH and more). The post would be centred around devices, but applicants are welcome from a joint background in EP, heart failure or imaging. The post is part of the arrhythmia department but efforts would be made to help maintain existing skills in EP, heart failure or imaging. Our aim is to attract and nurture leaders in clinical research with a primary focus on cardiac devices
