Job summary

The Lead Surgical Pharmacist role will be essential for delivering the surgical pharmacy and clinical pharmacy team vision. This is an exciting expansion of an existing post, to provide leadership full-time to the surgical pharmacy service.

The post-holder will manage and lead the surgical pharmacy team across all adult hospital sites at UHBW, basing themselves on the Bristol Royal Infirmary site.

The post-holder will expand on lead all aspects of the surgical pharmacy services, with a focus on new and important areas such as involvement in the entire patient pathway from pre-operative assessment, to theatres and inpatient stay and on discharge, supporting the opioid stewardship agenda and on new and existing patient safety opportunities to deliver safe and effective practice to all surgical patients.

Main duties of the job

The focus of this role will be to ensure the safe and effective delivery of the surgical pharmacy service to adult patients across UHBW.

Your day to day duties will include (but not be limited to):

  • Working in partnership with patients and colleagues to deliver the Pharmacy Team Vision for Surgery (see attached)
  • Provide specialist input and advice to the surgery inpatient wards and ensure a safe and effective service is delivered to inpatients
  • Lead on the education and training agenda for the rotational pharmacists, technicians, foundation year pharmacists and the wider MDT
  • Develop yourself as an expert in surgical therapeutics, and provide that expertise to all surgical specialties
  • Deliver our late-duty (overtime) and weekend and Bank Holiday (off-duty) shifts on a rota basis, as outlined in the job description
