University Hospitals Sussex Microbiology and Infection Service is looking to appoint a dynamic, highly motivated, enthusiastic, suitably qualified and experienced candidate to join the Microbiology and Infection Service in the role of deputy to the Head of Service.

The Microbiology and Infection service is based on three sites at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, Princess Royal Hospital, Haywards Heath and St Richards Hospital, Chichester. The Brighton laboratory is the commissioned regional public health microbiology laboratory for UKHSA and links are established with BSMS Medical School. The laboratory holds UKAS accreditation and offers excellent training and staff development opportunities.

A full range of clinical services including virus serology and an extensive range of molecular tests are provided from the Brighton laboratory; water and environmental microbiology at the Haywards Heath laboratory and a full range of clinical services including virus serology and some molecular tests at the Chichester laboratory.

Main duties of the job

Applicants must be HCPC registered, hold an MSc or Fellowship of the IBMS or equivalent with extensive post registration experience at a senior level in a routine diagnostic microbiology laboratory and in a leadership/management role.

An advanced scientific knowledge of Microbiology along with the ability to demonstrate extensive experience of team leadership and management. Experience of working with very senior managers and director level teams in an NHS Trust and in wider networks is desirable as the successful candidate will be expected to deputise fully for the head of service.

An extensive knowledge and awareness of the requirements of UKAS, other quality management standards and Health and Safety Standards is essential.

Whilst this post will be mainly based at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton, the post holder will be required to regularly attend the microbiology laboratory at Princess Royal Hospital, Haywrad Heath and as the merged pathology departments evolve, attendance at St. Richards Hospital, Chichester will also be required.
