Job summary

This may be the varied and rewarding role you are looking for where every day is different and where you can use a variety of psychology skills.

We warmly welcome applications from psychologists who are recently qualified and will support your development through a ‘Preceptorship’ post, through to those who are ready to undertake an 8a position from the outset.

Beechlydene and Ashdown inpatient units in Salisbury are part of the acute care pathway in Wiltshire, which aims to support service users in their recovery from acute mental health challenges, through multidisciplinary professional teamwork and the adoption of evidence-based clinical practice. You will be joining an established multidisciplinary team, where the role of the psychologist is much valued. Beechlydene unit is an open acute inpatient ward for adults. Ashdown unit is a psychiatric intensive care unit (PICU) for males, offering more intensive support, within a more secure environment.

As a Preceptee Psychologist, you will commence at Band 7 and in conjunction with your supervisor will progress through a structured development plan with review process, to support your transition to fulfilling competencies at Band 8a. Responsibilities of the role will adapt to match the developing skills of the successful candidate.

We are flexible how we recruit to the Psychology role and would welcome applications from applicants wanting flexible hours or part time employment.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will provide a comprehensive psychology service, including specialist assessment, formulation, individual and group interventions. There is also a strong focus on indirect work through team formulation, reflective practice and training with staff teams. You will need to be well organised with the ability to prioritise your work according to clinical need and liaise effectively with team colleagues and professionals in other teams/services. The post holder will also supervise an assistant psychologist.

You will be part of a growing acute care psychology team where exciting developments are taking place; including use of Comprehend Cope Connect (CCC) to guide formulation, a third wave CBT approach. Other initiatives include the adaptation of evidence based therapeutic approaches of Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT) and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) within an acute care setting.

The importance of support and supervision for psychology staff is prioritised. There are opportunities for joint working and being part of a dynamic Trust wide CPD network for inpatient therapy staff. You will be dually supported by Wiltshire Psychological Therapy Services (PTS), an enthusiastic, friendly, and innovative team who meet on a monthly basis.

We have close ties with the University of Bath Clinical Psychology Doctorate Training Programme, with opportunities to teach, provide placements, and collaborate on research.
