Job summary

To act as the clinical lead for voice in the adult Speech & Language Therapy department, advancing clinical practice in this area of work and taking a lead in evolving and embedding best practice into clinical practice.

To perform highly specialist assessment and treatment of clients with voice disorders. The post holder will be the lead Speech & Language Therapist for the management of voice services across Calderdale and Huddersfield and work closely with colleagues in the ENT team.

Educate and train Speech & Language Therapists and qualified and non-qualified healthcare / education staff including medical staff.

To assist in the daily operational management of the Speech & Language Therapy Team.

To support the Speech and Language Team to deliver care on acute wards where pressures dictate.

Main duties of the job

To autonomously manage and prioritise a clinical caseload of clients with ENT diagnoses at a highly specialist level, assessing and treating clients and maintaining accurate clinical records.

To have highly specialist assessment and treatment skills in the following areas, included but not limited to:

Perceptual & instrumental assessment of vocal & respiratory behaviour. This may involve endoscopic evaluation of the larynx and stroboscopy

Direct treatment approaches to enable efficient voice production, including Laryngeal Manipulation

Indirect treatment approaches to address any vocal health/psychological/social factors

To act, within the Speech & Language Therapy voice service, as a resource and to provide advice/second opinion for colleagues.

To take a lead, and work collaboratively with other members of the MDT to ensure effective care pathways and transfer of care.

To input to appropriate clinics alongside ENT voice clinic.

To be able to debate the blurring of boundaries across professions and where competent take on aspects of blurred boundary working.

To work efficiently to manage professional time and delegate according to the training and competency levels of other team members to ensure the effective delivery of the service.

To give highly specialist advice and training to clients, carers and other professionals, as appropriate to ensure provision of good patient care.

To be aware of up to date research and share this with colleagues as appropriate.

CHFT employs over 6,000 colleagues who deliver compassionate care from our two main hospitals, Calderdale Royal Hospital (CRH) and Huddersfield Royal Infirmary (HRI) as well as in community sites, health centres and in patients’ homes.

In December 2018 the Department of Health and Social Care awarded CHFT to invest in local health services. This investment will be used to build new buildings on both sites including a brand new A&E and Paediatric A&E building, a new Enhanced ICU and an upgrade to theatres wards.
