Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated person to lead the scrub team and support the new day surgery unit in Main Theatres. We are seeking an experienced, qualified professional with excellent scrub skills and up to date knowledge in Trauma & Orthopaedics, Gynaecology, General Surgery, Laparoscopic Surgery, Urology, Ophthalmic, and Emergency Surgery.
You will have the motivation, vision and leadership qualities necessary to lead a successful scrub team. As a key member of the senior team, you will deliver high standards of perioperative care, and have the ability to support and develop scrub practitioners/nurses to facilitate excellent patient care in the day surgery and theatre department.
The post holder will be expected to work closely with the day surgery team and day surgery manager to run an efficient effective service in the new procedure room and improve the efficiency of the main theatre suite. They will cover in the absence of the day surgery unit manager.
You must be a Registered Nurse (NMC) or Registered Operating Department Practitioner (HCPC) with a proven experience and training record within the scrub in above offer excellent educational opportunities from in-house study courses to post graduate education.
Main duties of the job
- The post holder will be responsible for the management of the theatre scrub and anaesthetic staff and resources within the procedure room in day surgery suite. S/he will work with Day Surgery Clinical Lead, Theatre Manager, Theatre Matron, and other Theatre/DSU/Recovery team leaders to ensure relevant standard are maintained at all times.
- S/he will work flexibly as required between the day surgery suite and main theatre, and will work clinically as scrub or anaesthetic as required.
- The post holder will work as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide the highest quality of care possible for our patients. S/he will aim to maintain patient’s confidentiality, dignity, personal and religious beliefs at all times.
- The post holder will be responsible to provide a safe and caring environment for patients and staff in scrub and anaesthetic area of the procedure room.

The theatre suite consists of a pre assessment suite, a day surgery suite and a new day surgery unit with a procedure room, seven theatres and a recovery suite. It is a very busy department, undertaking emergency and elective surgery both adult and paediatric. We undertake general surgery, orthopaedic surgery, colorectal surgery, gynaecological surgery, breast surgery and opthalmic surgery.
All the theatre/recovery and day surgery staff work as a cohesive team to respect the privacy and dignity of all the patients and ensure a high quality of care is given.

- Set, achieve, monitor and maintain standards of care ensuring safe practice and taking action if these fall below acceptable levels.

- Manage the efficient running of the theatre when allocated the theatre co-ordinator role, ensuring most effective use of staff, supplies and services to promote a safe environment for staff and patients.
- Participate in the recruitment and selection process for theatres
- Maintain equipment register for specialist area and order, utilise and maintain relevant equipment.
- Plan the workload and staff skill-mix for the specialist area, ensuring e-rostering is compliant with e-rostering rules and Trust policy.
- Manage the process and outcomes of local disciplinary, sickness and grievance issues in the absence of the day surgery clinical lead, theatre clinical leads, and Theatre Matron.
- Manage your team HR issues such as performance management and sickness management as required.
- Manage scrub/anaesthetic team to maintain clear and accurate records of patients care in patients Care Plan and in Medway electronically.
- Lead innovations in patients intraoperative, monitor and review standards and procedures, work collaboratively with the MDT.
- Support Theatre Productivity Plan to ensure expected targets are achieved.
- Escalate any relevant concerns to relevant team leaders, clinicians and Theatre Manager.
- Ensure cost reduction efficiency savings are planned and delivered annually.
- The post holder will be expected address any theatre issues and escalate to the theatre manager if unable to resolve it.
- Support all theatre staff with training on the relevant systems, guidelines and policies.
- Participate in theatre utilisation programmes and theatre improvement programmes.
- Participate in relevant auditing and initiate in improving data quality.
- Be proactive in the undertaking of staff appraisals where required for theatre team.
- Ensure appropriate practices are in place and updated in line with Trust and national standards.
- Assist theatre manager in meeting and maintaining the Trust standards.
- Facilitate effective communication with other members of the MDT, including organising and chairing weekly theatre team meetings.
