An exciting opportunity has arisen for a 30 hour per week permanent psychology post to improve the lives of patients and their families affected by haematological conditions within the Coventry area. This is an established psychology post within the Haematology Team, who value psychological approaches as an integrative part of patient care. You will take a lead role for psychological care for this population supported by a senior psychologist within Oncology. The service provides much needed psychological therapy and psychologically focused care to patients treated by UHCW as well as providing training, support, supervision and consultation to clinicians.
We are seeking a qualified and motivated psychologist, who is passionate about making a difference in haematology and supporting people to live well, with and beyond, their conditions, including towards end of life. The Haematology Psychology service is part of the growing clinical health psychology team working with people struggling with the impact of their physical health condition or diagnosis at UHCW
The post will be based at the University Hospital Coventry but may also include work at Rugby St Cross Hospital.
Main duties of the job
To be responsible for evidence based psychological interventions with patients and their families carers referred to the Haematology Psychology Service service and specifically to promote adaptation and adjustment. To ensure the systematic provision of psychological service, including the responsibility to prioritise work appropriately.
To use psychological and neuropsychological tests, self-report measures, rating scales, direct and indirect structured observations and semi-structured interviews with patients, family members and carers and others involved in their care. To follow up and to re-assess clients when considered appropriate, using approved statistical methods to make valid comparisons.
To communicate both orally, and in written reports, the content of these investigations and resulting formulations to support the work of multidisciplinary colleagues.
You must be HCPC registered, with experience of working with people with physical health conditions, and comfortable working both in inpatient settings and in outpatient clinics. We are looking for someone with excellent communication skills and a commitment to work as part of the multi-disciplinary team.
Please note that this is a 30 hours part time post, however, we will accept applications from candidates wanting fewer hours or job shares.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- To provide high quality psychological services to patients within and their families.
- To deliver specialist psychological assessments of patients, based upon the appropriate use, interpretation and integration of complex psychological and physical health information collected from a variety of sources as appropriate, including: psychometric tests, self-report measures, rating scales, direct observations and semi-structured interviews with patients, family members and others involved in the care.
- To formulate and implement plans for the psychological treatment and/or management of the patients mental health/physical health difficulties based upon a collaborative understanding of the persons difficulties, using appropriate conceptual frameworks, and employing evidence-based, effective interventions.
- To be responsible for implementing a range of highly specialist psychological interventions for individuals, families and groups within the service, adjusting and refining psychological formulations, where appropriate, drawing upon different explanatory models and maintaining a number of provisional hypotheses.
- To make highly skilled evaluations and decision about treatment options taking into account both theoretical and therapeutic models and highly complex factors concerning historical culture and developmental and physical health processes that have shaped the individual or system.
- To exercise autonomous professional responsibility for the assessment and therapeutic treatment of patients, including ending therapy and discharge from the service, and, where appropriate onward referral to other services.
- To provide specialist and sensitive psychological advice, guidance and consultation to other professionals and agencies both within and outside the Trust when necessary, contributing directly to the patients formulation, diagnosis and treatment plan.
- To take a lead in supporting other members of the multidisciplinary team to access a psychologically based framework for understanding the issues for the patients under our care, through the provision of advice, supervision and consultation and the dissemination of psychological research and theory. To undertake risk assessment and risk management for individual patients as appropriate and to provide general advice to other professional on psychological aspects of risk assessment and management, including signposting to other services where appropriate.
- To assist in the development and promotion of psychologically focused care for patients and their families across all settings where care takes place.
- To attend and contribute as appropriate to multi-disciplinary meetings.
- To contribute to research opportunities, in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team and the local Universities to further knowledge, understanding and interventions in the area.
- To communicate with patients and colleagues in a skilled and sensitive manner, both verbally and in written communication, relevant information concerning the psychological assessment, formulation and treatment plans of patients under their care. Information is likely to be complex, highly sensitive, and highly emotive and may be contentious, and recipients may be hostile, antagonistic or highly emotional. Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills are required.
- To elicit highly sensitive information sometimes through interpreters or advocates where there is a need for reassurance, empathy and to work collaboratively and respectfully with the patient.
- To actively work toward multidisciplinary/interdisciplinary working and team formulation regarding all aspects of patient care, both within the hospital and with outside agencies.
