Job summary

The post holder will be attached to Medicine for the Elderly for 4 months from April 5th to August 1st 2023, during which time they will be primarily based in Lewis Loyd ward, a general geriatrics ward, under the supervision of Dr David James, consultant geriatrician.

All Medicine for the Elderly consultants and SpRs participate in the acute general medical on- call rota. SpRs in MfE undertake acute on call within medical firm 5 that consists of six medical consultants supported by a separate team of ST1, F1 and F2 doctors.

The Trust doctor (Foundation level) will have the opportunity to consolidate general medical skills by working on the acute Medical on call rota.

On call: On call shift pattern :Long day shifts on acute take or post take, ward cover “2nd on” and “3rd on” shifts including weekends.

The FY1 will be responsible for other specific clinical duties as allocated by consultants including performing duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.

The posts are approved for specialty training in General Practice. Ward-based clinical commitments of the post are based exclusively at St Mary’s Hospital.

The General responsibilities of all three post-holders are to:

  • Daily to review all patients admitted in their ward areas
  • Provide medical cross-cover to the all patients in the Medicine for the Elderly department where necessary
  • To attend multidisciplinary meetings
  • General (Internal) Medical on call rota
  • To teach junior medical/paramedical staff and Year 3 and Year 5 medical students of Imperial College School of Medicine.

  • Rosie Belcher Consultant, Acute Frailty (1st Floor), also undergraduate firm lead, SMH F2 Training Programme director, works in community
  • David James Consultant, Lewis Lloyd Ward (Geriatric Female Ward, 15 beds), also Trust dementia lead, works in community.

The elderly care consultants within the department have specialist interests in acute assessment of the elderly, frailty, falls, dizziness and fragility fractures, Parkinsons disease/other movement disorders, dementia, peri-operative care/ortho-geriatric medicine, patient safety and medical education.
