Who are we?
The Intensive Care Unit has one team providing a great service across two units. These units are dedicated in providing care for seriously ill patients from across a range of medical and surgical specialties. Having two Intensive Care Units means we can separate the care we offer to our patients. The new 14 beds Intensive Care Unit is contained in a negative pressure environment, having sealed areas with carefully controlled ventilation that prevents contaminated air from escaping the room which maximises safety for staff and patients.

Our Band 5 pathway includes:
- A 6 week supernumerary period (including induction)
- Progression through the nationally recognised ‘Critical Care Steps’ Competency Framework
- A comprehensive education package including the Foundations in Critical Care Course.
Your future Career
Choosing a career in Critical Care nursing will open many doors for you. We will invest in your future development and this could lead you into exciting roles within Critical Care such as a Sister/ Charge Nurse, Senior Sister/Charge Nurse, Matron, Education Practice Facilitator or Advanced Critical Care Practioner.
Main duties of the job
To work according to the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and relevant professional guidelines as a named nurse or key worker (with facilitation) for a defined group of patients and take responsibility for: o The assessment of care and health education needs; o The development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care including discharge planning for each patient.
To gain experience and skills in:
- Clinical practice
- Facilitation and teaching
- Management (as appropriate
To work in accordance with the RUH Nursing Strategy and contribute towards achieving its objectives and maintain effective communication.
To participate in Clinical Supervision as appropriate and to teach and act as a facilitator/mentor/preceptor/ role model to less experienced staff.
