Job summary

We are looking to recruit a Nursing Assistant, preferablywith experience in caring for patients with palliative care needs.

NVQ 2/3 in Health & Social Care would be an advantage.

The successful applicant will be part of an enthusiasticmulti-disciplinary team providing care for patients and families, both on the hospice Inpatient Unit and our Hospice at Home team.

The post is subject to flexible rostering (annualisedhours) and internal rotation to meet the needs of the service.

Main duties of the job

To assist trained nursing staff in the delivery of high standards of care in accordance with the policies and procedures in place at Springhill Hospice and within the Nursing team.

About us

This role is based at Springhill Hospice, Rochdale.

SpringhillHospice providesthe following palliative care services to the local adultpopulation who are suffering from the effects of life-limiting and terminalillnesses:

A 16-bed Inpatientunit providing 24-hour medical and nursing care.

Hospice atHome Service – supports people whowant to end their days in their own home by providing the support and symptommanagement they need to be able to do so.

A DayTherapies Centre for up to 16 patients, 4-days-a-week, offeringcomplementary therapies (e.g. reflexology, aromatherapy and massage);creative and beauty therapies, social activities and clinical support.

CommunityService – provides specialistpalliative care and support to patients and families in their own homes

A 24-hour PalliativeCare Advice Line for patients, families, carers and health professionals.

Bereavement Support for relatives following loss.

CounsellingServices for patients, carers andrelatives, provided by a qualified therapist.

An EducationUnit – an in-house training facility for hospice staff and local health andsocial care professionals, with the main focus of training being on theSpringhill Palliative Care Education Passport’ (SPCEP) which ensures that corepalliative care skills are taught to all grades of staff.

Ward Duties:

1.1To work as a member of the nursing team assisting nurses to provide a high standard of care to patients, both on the inpatient unit and within the patients own home.

1.2Assist in general care of patients e.g. hygiene, care of pressure areas, nutritional needs.

1.3Assist in maintaining a high standard of cleanliness.

1.4Perform escort/chaperone duties as directed by the trained nurses.

1.5Inform trained staff of any change in patients condition.

1.6Be aware of the need to treat patients as individuals. Maintain patients confidentiality at all times.

1.7Have an understanding of the principles of infection control and the risks of cross-infection.

1.8Ensure correct policy for care and custody of patients property/valuables is adhered to.

Education:

2.1Attend mandatory training programmes and undertake online mandatory training as required.

2.2Report to senior staff any situation/occurrence reported to you by patients, relatives/visitors.

2.3As required by trained staff, undertake training and be assessed on competency by Ward Sister and Senior nurses.

Personnel/Communications:

3.1 Read, understand and comply with all Hospice policies and procedures, applying the principles as appropriate to role.

3.2To be aware of individual specific responsibilities in respect of the Safeguarding of Vulnerable Adults, in relation to role.

3.3Report to trained staff as appropriate.

3.4Participate in the appraisal process.

3.5Communicate effectively both verbally and written. Answer telephone correctly and politely at all times. Refer enquiries to Nurse in charge.

3.6Be aware of procedure for evacuation of patients in case of fire. Know emergency exits. Demonstrate knowledge to trained staff.
