Role title: WebOps Engineer

Location: Manchester

Reporting to the Lead WebOps Engineer, the WebOps Engineer will be responsible for:

  • Building and configuring new secure server platforms, along with supporting automated tooling.
  • Maintaining existing infrastructure and legacy environments, suggesting improvements and supporting migrations.
  • Building the security of new and existing infrastructure in order to protect information from unauthorised access, disclosure, disruption, modification or destruction.
  • Being a continual learner, keeping up to date with modern infrastructure tools, technologies, security standards and protocols.
  • Contributing to the engineering community of practise through sharing knowledge and skill, as well as collaborating with colleagues.
  • Acting as a digital ambassador for NICE and DIT by sharing experiences through blog posts and engaging with the wider engineering and IT community.
  • Working independently, having a high level of discipline to manage and take ownership of technical issues.
  • Being able to analyse technical problems and advise appropriate solutions, sometimes faced with conflicting requirements.
  • Being able to communicate highly complex technical issues and risks to non-technical business stakeholders external to the team, both verbally and written.
  • Being able to influence senior technical engineers regarding the architecture and systems, often involving in-depth technical negotiations at team meetings and the DIT architecture forum.

Main duties of the job

To be considered for this role, we are looking for:

  • Significant experience with the AWS platform.
  • Experience working in, or with, a DevOps team.
  • A good level of experience with common database technologies such as SQL and MySQL, along with NoSQL platforms like MongoDB.
  • Good experience in the operational management of complex web application stacks running on the Windows server platform.
  • Good knowledge of scripting and CLI tools, such as AWSCLI and Powershell.
  • Experience with any infrastructure as a service and configuration management tools like Cloudformation, Terraform, Ansible etc.
  • Familiarity with common web application network protocols, including TLS.
  • Experience debugging complicated application stacks in a high availability environment.
  • An understanding of common application deployment strategies, continuous integration and version control.
  • An ability to rapidly acquire new skills, while being comfortable working with new technologies.

Although not essential, it would be great if you also had:

  • Any experience using Azure
  • Knowledge of Linux server environments
  • An understanding of Serverless technology stacks
  • Experience with logging platforms, such as the Elastic, Logstash and Kibana stack
  • Any experience with writing and maintaining technical documentation, especially within collaborative environments
  • History of working in a multidisciplinary team

About us

The Digital, Information and Technology (DIT) directorate is a 70 strong team of digital, information and technology professionals. Our digital teams adopt a user centric agile methodology and work in multi-disciplinary teams (MDT’s) with analytics and insight to develop and maintain NICE’s suite of digital and technology services. We are playing a key role in the implementation of NICE’s digital transformation programme.

The teams in DIT design, develop and maintain NICE’s suite of externally facing digital services including the NICE website, Clinical Knowledge Summaries, BNF and UK Pharmascan which together attract more than 2 million users a month.

The directorate is also responsible for NICE’s internal guidance production systems including content management, authoring and publishing systems, with a view to generating internal efficiencies and to ensure NICE takes advantage of digital innovations arising across the health and care landscape, such as machine learning and data science. As such DIT has a key role to play in keeping NICE’s guidance relevant, high-quality, up-to-date, and accessible.
