Greater Manchester Cancer is recruiting a Cancer Academy Director

Successful applicants will:

  • Provide clinical and managerial leadership, and have overall responsibility for the development and delivery of a Cancer Academy strategic plan that spans all pathways, care settings and professionalisms
  • Lead the Greater Manchester Cancer Education Collaborative and delivery of the agreed education principles to reduce inequity around cancer education
  • Develop the ePortfolio elements of the Academy including supporting colleagues to write career frameworks and operationalise skill passports
  • Support colleagues across all care settings to improve recruitment and retention through embedding a culture of lifelong learning
  • Provide evidence and expertise to design innovative approaches for cancer education
  • Support the Senior Responsible Officer and GM Cancer Workforce and Education team in providing clinical and managerial leadership for the delivery of the key outcomes outlined in the NHS Long Term Plan

Applications will be based on merit and will include an assessment of future potential in addition to previous experience. Applications will be assessed by the Senior Responsible Officer and representatives of the Greater Manchester Cancer Senior Team with the appointment process involving various stakeholders of the GM healthcare system including people affected by cancer.

Main duties of the job

Applications will be accepted from clinicians (senior doctors/nurses/AHPs) from any of the Greater Manchester and East Cheshire Provider Organisations.

The post holder is accountable to the GM Cancer Senior Responsible Officer.

The post is a fixed term tenure ending 31/3/24, for 1 PA (4 hours) per week.

This post is open to medical and non-medical senior clinical leaders.

About us

.The Cancer Academy is a programme of work within the Cancer Alliance’s Workforce and Education programme and is the independent hub for cancer education across Greater Manchester. As the hive of cancer education, the Academy supports the development of a sustainable lifelong learning model for cancer care across all care settings. The programme ensures that our workforce is equipped with the skills and tools necessary to deliver the best patient care whilst supporting the delivery of the NHS People Plan and the Long Term Plan ambitions for cancer services.

The Academy will help to reduce inequity around accessing cancer education and provides a mechanism to standardise training, education and career frameworks for our current and future non-medical workforce.

Leadership and expertise

  • Have overall responsibility for the development and delivery of the Cancer Academy,
  • Develop and deliver a Greater Manchester Cancer Academy Strategy and implementation plan which feeds into a pan-GM Education Strategy
  • Develop an overarching system wide cancer education strategy which aligns to the GM education principles
  • Establish and Chair the GM Education Collaborative to oversee the delivery of the agreed Education Principles and GM cancer education strategy
  • Support clinical postholders within the Academy team to:
    • develop educational frameworks / packages for the non-medical and non-clinical workforce across all relevant settings.
    • establish strong links with system stakeholders from across GM, including primary care training hubs and equivalent for healthcare professions working in Social Care settings, to ensure engagement with the project, synergy of approaches and consistency of implementation.
  • Attend frequent meetings with the Senior Education Programme Lead and the GM Cancer Academy Programme Board, to review progress and objectives.
  • Keep outcomes that matter to patients at the heart of the programme and its objectives.
  • Attend the Greater Manchester Cancer Clinical Lead forums

Delivery

  • Work closely with the Greater Manchester Cancer Education Collaborative to deliver the principles across the system and support the core team with objectives that pertain to the Academy.
  • Ensure education frameworks support the whole of the non-medical cancer workforce, which will help to dissolve the historic divide between primary, community, secondary and social care settings, by being available to all healthcare professionals working with people affected by cancer.
  • Ensure that effective efforts are continually made to minimise unnecessary variation in cancer care.
  • Recognise and mitigate risks to the programme objectives, escalating to Programme Board accordingly and Senior Responsible Officer.
  • Attend regular meetings with the GM Cancer Academy programme team.
  • Report regularly the progress of the Cancer Academy to the GM Cancer Workforce and Education Board, and GM People Board when required.
  • Take responsibility for defining and sustaining outcome measures and metrics to demonstrate that the project is being delivered and monitor performance against these.
  • To support GM Cancer in driving education transformation, building sustainability and delivering value for money.
  • Takes responsibility for and ensures the efficient management of budget / resources for the Academy programme.
  • Leads and co-ordinates the development and production of proposals and business cases to support the delivery of the GM Cancer Education strategy and Academy plans.

  • Gain a robust understanding of the current non-medical workforce across all settings and training gaps by gathering and reviewing intelligence on cancer pathways.
  • Actively participate in sharing the Academy initiative with key stakeholders to embed a lifelong learning culture.
  • Identify education strategies and workstreams already in progress / planned across GM, regionally and nationally and ensure the framework is in alignment.
  • Use outcomes, and experience to make recommendations to the GM Cancer Senior Responsible Officer, and local commissioners regarding sustaining the Cancer Academy and wider rollout of the academy model across other cancer pathways.
  • Promote the Cancer Academy as the independent hub for cancer education for all healthcare professionals across Greater Manchester and East Cheshire.
  • Focus on quality improvement and performance outcomes across the programme portfolio, ensuring quality assurance is a team responsibility at all levels.
