Job summary

The post holder is required to help and support health professionals to provide a high standard of information and support to all mothers and their partners relating to both breast and formula feeding. This support will be offered in the antenatal and early postnatal period.

You will be supporting women, babies and their families in their feeding journey which is paramount to us at North West Anglia Foundation Trust.

Main duties of the job

Our vision is to develop our current Infant feeding services further in line with National standards and ensuring that this is sustained

The hours will be between Monday and Friday and we are flexible with the start and end times.

Job description

Job responsibilities

1.1 Promote and maintain a welcoming approach to all patients/clients, relatives and visitors; maintaining an awareness that they are often anxious and will be sensitive to the reception they receive.

1.2 To establish and maintain good communications and working relationships between staff, patients, relatives, and visitors.

1.3 To create an environment that promotes and protects breastfeeding and offers women sufficient information and support to enable them to breastfeed successfully.

1.4 To share impartial, evidenced based information about Infant feeding with antenatal and postnatal women to enable them to make a fully informed choice as to how they feed and care for their babies in accordance with the Trust Infant Feeding Policy, associated guidelines and Baby Friendly Standards

1.5 To ensure all care is mother and family centred, non-judgemental and that a mothers decisions about feeding her baby are supported and respected.

1.6 To be involved in the planning the care of well women and their babies in relation to infant feeding with the support of the midwife, and then implement and evaluate that care, reporting back and referring to the midwife as necessary.

1.7 To be vigilant and alert at all times to the appearance and behaviour of mothers and babies, reporting back to a midwife any deviations from normal or other causes for concern regarding physical, mental/emotional, and social well-being.

1.8 To ensure that client goodwill and confidence in the Trust is maintained at all times by carrying out duties in a confident, courteous, and sympathetic manner.

1.9 To participate in maintaining a safe, orderly, and efficient working environment, especially with regards to requirements of infection control.

1.10 To prioritise workload and manage own time and work activities efficiently and effectively.

1.11 Documentation of support/care given and any care plans implemented

1.12 To participate in antenatal infant feeding education

1.13 Carry out breastfeeding assessments with mothers and their babies prior to discharge from the maternity unit

1.14 Teach parents who choose to formula feed how; on a one-to-one basis, to safely prepare feeds and sterilise equipment.

1.15 Undertake clinical audit in order to evaluate and develop evidence based practice relating to infant feeding within Womens Health based on Baby Friendly Standards

1.16 To liaise regularly with the Infant Feeding Lead Midwife/team for Womens Health to ensure that women receive consistent support with infant feeding during the early postnatal period

1.17 Provide support for the Infant Feeding Team in preparation for and maintaining Baby Friendly Accreditation

1.18 Participation in staff education/updating relating to all aspects of infant feeding in line with Baby Friendly Standards
