We are pleased to offer the opportunity for 2 enthusiastic with well-rounded training to join an existing team of 5 Consultants.

You will join a fantastic multidisciplinary team, led by Dr Hafiz and colleagues. The department has expanded steadily and has become extremely effective in providing acute and rehabilitative care to frail, older medical admissions.

Main duties of the job

You will work within an inpatient bed base that covers 3 wards and has an additional rehabilitation ward. You will be supported by 3 frailty nurse specialists, 2 Parkinsons nurse specialists, 2 Registrars, 1 associate specialist, 2 GPVTS and 9 Trainees.

There is a strong commitment to high quality education and you will be encouraged to support in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. As a clinical and educational supervisor you will shape future generations of physicians. The team are committed to, in addition to Grand Round presenting, dedicated Wednesday Geriatrics teaching sessions.

The post holders will also be expected to participate in the emergency out of hours General Medicine on call Rota.

There are six other consultant physicians for Older Age medicine, each having a lead responsibility for a sub-specialty within the directorate:

Dr F Al-Modaris: Falls/Syncope clinic

Dr N V Athavale: Orthogeriatrics and Bone Health

Dr A H Abdelhafiz: Lead Clinician and Consultant in Diabetes in the Elderly and Parkinsons disease

Dr M Roycroft: Frailty

Dr Punnoose: joint post with Stroke

Dr Ulley: Palliative care

There are specialist nurses attached to each of the subspecialties.

Intermediate care is well established in Rotherham and the directorate works in close collaboration with primary care and social care colleagues to promote the use of intermediate care facilities in the community.

The post is based at The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust Hospital. The Healthcare for Older People Clinical Service Unit has a bed base over three acute general medicine wards. Emergency admissions are accepted and assessed initially in the integrated Medical Admissions Unit for the Division of Medicine.

The out of hours on call rota in integrated with other General Physicians and currently works on 1 in 16 basis to support the Emergency Medicine consultants and trainee doctors rota, providing specialist advice and ward rounds on call.

To provide a consultant medical service for inpatient and outpatient services and for the proper functioning of the department.

Secretarial Support & Office Accommodation

The post holder will be allocated office accommodation and will be provided with secretarial support. A personal computer with access to both the Trust internal IT systems and the Internet will be provided.
