Clinical or Counselling Psychologist, Band 8a Secondment/Fixed Term Contract – 12 months Part Time

We are seeking to recruit a highly skilled, innovative and experienced Clinical or Counselling Psychologist , in a positive new development on a newly commissioned ward in the Mental Health Acute service in Bromley.

This progressive and exciting post forms part of the expanding service provision of acute and transitional services in Bromley borough where the aim is to deliver a range of psychological approaches as early as possible in a service user’s experience of difficulties. Within Oxleas acute psychology is well established and expanding in acknowledgement of the increasing and widening evidence base and clinically/organisationally effective contribution psychological approaches can provide to the acute and crisis settings.

This half time post will help the service set the direction for psychological approaches to acute distress and follow up provision. This will involve leading formulation, brief intervention and setting whole team treatment approaches for wards and follow up. The post holder will join an existent and established team of qualified (Consultant, Principal and Highly Specialist) psychologists and assistant psychologists based in the acute, crisis and mental health liaison directorate on the Princess Royal Hospital site. Each post is ward/MDT dedicated and the newly created post is designed to complement this provision on the newly commissioned ward.

Main duties of the job

A proportion of the clinical work will be with populations with complex trauma and severe interpersonal issues. As such the post is well suited for people with a strong and active interest in working with complex trauma and people with a diagnosis of personality disorder. Similarly given the range of work in the acute field there will also be opportunities to work trans-diagnostically and with people with psychotic continuum presentations.

Admission times in the unit can vary, which provides scope for both short and medium-long term psychological interventions. Where clinically indicated transitional and follow-up work can also be factored in post discharge. This continuity way of working and spanning systems provides the capacity to complete longer pieces of clinical work including liaison with community services, facilitating discharge, preventing re-admission and improving the overall service user journey.

The post holder will provide psychological assessment in the acute environment and interventions following a formulation-based approach. This could lead to individual or group cognitive, systemic or psychodynamic approaches as well as consultation to the MDT and reflective practice for staff. Supervision of other junior members of the psychology team and teaching to members of the wider service provision will be essential parts of the post. A full time Assistant Psychologist is also being recruited for the newly commissioned ward.
