We are looking for an outstanding psychiatrist to join our Psychiatric Liaison Team.

The successful applicant will join anestablished psychiatric liaison team at Derriford. The team was formed by theamalgamation of an older adult and working age team in 2016. The liaisonpractitioners work across the age range from 18 upwards. In addition the Safeguarding Adults team,Alcohol Liaison nurse, Frailty Nurse (Cornwall Partnership Trust) and LiaisonLearning Disability and Autism Team are co-located within the base.

Appointment will be to the new Consultantcontract, salary range pro rata £88,364 to £119,133 for ten Programmed Activities (PAs),dependent on Seniority and Thresholds, subject to negotiation of the agreed jobplan.

Main duties of the job

Enjoying the fast paced nature ofageless Liaison Psychiatry, you will be enthusiastic, professional andcommitted to providing the very best care for patients who often presentthemselves at the most critical stage of their illness. You will provide soundmedical advice with ease to the internal team and also to colleagues in primarycare.

As an experienced consultant, youwill possess the skills and knowledge to supervise the foundation, GP andpsychiatry trainees assigned to the department (you will receive protected timeto do this). You will also have the opportunity to take part in psychiatricteaching and also in other academic meetings. You will be at the forefront ofdecisions regarding service provision, development and delivery and you will beat the heart of decision making with regards to risk and coordination ofpathways for your patients.

TheLiaison Psychiatry Service is currently funded to meet Core 24 Model ServiceSpecifications with aspiration to further develop the service, includingexploring PLAN accreditation and to provide more integrated psychologicalmedicine service input to UHP. The department is developing close links withkey partner services in UHP such as the Emergency Department, with 3 Clinical Specialist Posts for Liaison Psychiatrybased in the emergency department recently funded to provide frontline triageand assessment.

Duties of the Post:

1. Tobe responsible for the diagnosis and formulation of management plans in complexcases, advising medical teams on appropriate integrated care. To act asResponsible Clinician for patients detained under the 1983 Mental Health Actwithin the General Hospital acute setting, when appropriate. Out of hours RC cover via Duty Consultantrota.

2. To provide clinical leadership to the team anddevelop the service in line with the needs of University Hospital Plymouth andLSW.

3. To provide advice regarding patient managementto colleagues in secondary and primary care. Bridging the gap with regard to management of psychosomatic conditionsin the community, (e.g. medically unexplained symptoms).

4. To assess andmanage risk (e.g. suicide risk, violence/aggression, absconding etc.) relatingto psychiatric conditions in general hospital settings.

5. Prescribingand giving advice to medical teams on psychotropic medication.

6. Providingexpertise, and fulfilling statutory role, in managing medico-legal issues usingCapacity and Mental Health legislation.

7. To supervisenon-training grade doctors andpsychiatric trainees allocated to your team. One hour per week supervision will benecessary as protected time for trainees attached to this post. This will include a CT1-3 or GP trainee andF1 trainees. This may include a higher trainee should they elect to work in this area, subject to availability and consultanteligibility.

8. Cover forleave will be provided internally by Consultant Liaison colleagues in the team. Usuallycover for detained patients who are under Section 17 leave in the GeneralHospital will be via the respective inpatient consultant. General liaison dutieswill be covered by the respective CMHT Consultants if these cannot be coveredfrom within the service. Cover for longterm sick leave will not be expected via these cross cover arrangements. [GR(S1]

9. To be eligiblefor participation in the psychiatric Consultant on-call duty rota (currently 1in 14), which covers both general adult, elderly psychiatric patients, as wellas Learning Disabilities. The WorkingTime Directive has been implemented on the Consultant on-call and it allows forcompensatory rest after on-call.

10. To adviseand assist in the planning of services. Setting goals and targets for the team according to local and nationaldrivers.

11. To play an active part in psychiatric teaching. There is an active postgraduate teaching programme in psychiatry and there are opportunities to contribute to other academicmeetings.

12. Medical students from the Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medical and Dentistry (PUPSMD) attend regularly to obtain psychiatricexperience as an integral part of their training, and the postholder will be expected toparticipate in teaching and providing feedback sessions to these medicalstudents.

13. An interest in research anda willingness to supervise trainees willbe encouraged.

14. To undertakeclinical audit activity and to participate in both internal and external auditas required for clinical governance and revalidation purposes.

15. Toparticipate in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) as approved by theRoyal College of Psychiatrists. LSW iscommitted to CPD and the study leave allocation is 33 days per three-yearperiod. The organisation funds CPD forits Consultants and all routine Journal Clubs and Case Conferences arevalidated for Internal Module CPD. Asubstantial part of each Wednesday is set aside for CPD activities. One Consultant is the local CPDco-ordinator. Local Peer Groups areestablished, for the RCPsych CPD/PDP programme, and the appointee will beinvited to join one of these. The postholderwill also be encouraged to join the perinatal peer group through the regionalnetwork.

Full RCPsych CPD requirements are supported,within 33 days over three year study leave entitlement. LSW supports senior medical staff taking onexternal roles, such as College posts subject to agreement in job planning.

16. Challengestigma and discrimination towards psychiatric patients and professionals byraising awareness, presentations/teaching sessions and informal discussionswith various professionals etc. in a general hospital setting.

17. To take anactive interest in LSW management. TheConsultant will work alongside the Service Manager to ensure smooth functioningof the service. They will be a member ofthe LSW Senior Medical Staffing Group and the Directorate Consultants PlanningGroup.

19. To take partin an Annual Appraisal Programme, with the development of Personal DevelopmentPlans, focused on Continuing Professional Development. Appraisal is by a locally trained andappointed peer.
