The Cancer services is welcoming a Consultant in Medical Oncology to provide outstanding inpatient and outpatient Oncology services across our acute hospital sites in Peterborough and Huntingdon. The role will be based at Peterborough City Hospital.

You will provide Systemic Anti-Cancer treatment for patients with breast UGI & CUP. In collaboration with other Oncologists, you will deliver a comprehensive Oncology Service including inpatient care and outpatient referrals and treatment.

You will work alongside a specialist team of 6 clinical oncologist consultants, 4 medical oncologist consultants, 1 palliative care physician, and 6 haematologists. The multidisciplinary team includes clinical nurse specialists, specialist palliative care and community Macmillan nurses.

You will be supported and encouraged in continuing your professional development and take part in research programmes. Our trust has an active research programme and is nationally recognised for its breast cancer trials. You would be expected to continue promoting Clinical Trial development and recruitment. You will take a lead in clinical trials related to Breast, UGI/CUP and assume local PI responsibilities for clinical trials in Breast, UGI/CUP.

Main duties of the job

The job plan consists of 10 programmed activities: 8.5 PA’s of direct clinical care and 1.5 PA’s of supported professional activities per week. You will be joining the Consultant rota on a 1:9 basis.

Our cancer unit at Peterborough City Hospital has a day unit, a haematology and oncology ward and cancer OPD. The Radiotherapy Unit has three Linear accelerators and an expanded catchment area to offer more local patients radiotherapy.

The Woodlands Centre at Hinchingbrooke Hospital has a Chemotherapy day unit with 17 chairs and Haematology and Oncology clinics. Other cancer treatments and chemotherapy services are provided at Stamford Hospital.

You will treat Breast Cancers, Upper Gastro-Intestinal Cancers and Carcinoma of unknown Primary (CUP) Cancers as well as Acute Oncology in collaboration with existing Clinical and Medical Oncology Consultant colleagues together with support for the Acute Oncology service nursing team (AOS). The allocation of time would be approximately as follows: Breast Cancers 0.4, UGI 0.2, CUP 0.1 and AOS 0.3 with some flexibility.

  • To develop the Trusts strategy in partnership with the chair of the Trusts Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) meetings leads and to be an active participant in the Breast, UGI & CUP cancers.
  • To lead the CUP service.
  • To offer support to the Acute Oncology Service. There may be a provision to consider leading AOS service depending on the requirement.
  • To develop and participate in collaborative initiatives, studies and trials regionally, nationally and internationally, having a high regard for clinical effectiveness and to the practice of evidence-based medicine.
  • To collaborate with colleagues at the Regional Cancer Centre (Cambridge University Hospitals Foundation Trusts (CUH), Cancer Units and other agencies to ensure optimum quality of care for cancer patients including referring patients to the Phase I trials unit at CUH.
  • Active participation in clinical audit, continuing professional development and research as appropriate. There is access to a study leave budget for appropriate CPD activities. The post holder will be expected to contribute to the Trust and CBU Clinical Governance processes including the dedicated monthly half days.
  • Professional supervision and training of Junior Medical Colleagues, education of Junior Colleagues in the department is encouraged and there are opportunities to act as clinical and educational supervisors. This may include a Medical Oncology SpR who are currently on rotation from CUH and under Clinical Supervision whilst in post.
