Wimbledon Depot recently welcomed its first Class 701 train, marking a significant milestone in the £1bn transformation of suburban travel. Our current fleet operating on the suburban network (Class 455, 458 and 707 trains) will be replaced over a 2 year period with 90 brand new 701’s. Drivers, maintenance and other depot colleagues are currently in training to develop the new skills needed for the next generation of trains that will be fitted with all new modern technology. Wimbledon depot will eventually become the new maintenance home for the entire Class 701 fleet.

Main Purpose 

The holder of this post is responsible for servicing, maintenance and repair of rolling stock in accordance with South West Railways specifications. Plus adherence to depot protection, safety, quality and environmental procedures, rules and regulations in force.

Responsible to the Production Manager, the post provides support for the delivery of the product, allocation of work, minor supervisory tasks and completion of relevant documentation.

This post holder will also act as the Production Manager in their absence.

Principle Accountabilities 

  • Work to laid down specifications and depot quality systems/ working instructions.
  • Allocate work to staff with associated paperwork.
  • Advise Production Manager of any additional work outside of the specification.
  • Obtain, use, care for, and return all test equipment and/or common user/specialist tools.
  • Complete and check necessary documentation associated with work sheets, unit history etc.
  • Oversee rolling stock technical problems in the office /on stock and impart knowledge to others as much as possible.
  • Ensure materials are available to carry out the necessary tasks and inform the Production Manager of any issues.
  • Undertake Depot Designated Persons duties as required.
  • Liase with Drivers/Shunters to plan movements of vehicles/units.
  • Undertake work in a safe manner and leading by example.
  • Impart knowledge from technical staff briefs.
  • Cover for the Production Manager in their absence.
  • Maintain appropriate levels of staff to carry out overhauls, together with the Production Manager.
  • Undertake in process quality checks.
  • Support communication processes for the Production Manager for example accidents/ incidents.
  • Carry out testing, repairs when required, or at other locations.
  • Work to be undertaken to comply with depot quality procedures.
  • Supervise and mentor assistants and apprentices and provide on the job training where required.
  • Undertake all required courses to be able to cover Production Manager.
  • Carry out monitoring and Supervision on tasks being undertaken.
  • Rail or Rolling Stock knowledge essential
  • Minimum Requirements

  • Strong Electrical/Mechanical Background
  • Specific 442 technical knowledge/Experience
  • Good communication & supervisory skills
  • Report writing skills
  • Computer literate
  • Passed in relevant rules
  • Working Pattern 

    Working an average of 37 hours per week

    Rotating 4 on 4 off roster, 12hr shifts, 1900-0700 and 0700-1900hrs
