The Plym Neuro Rehab Unit at Mount Gould Hospital is offering an exciting opportunity for an OT Assistant to join the Plym Neuro Rehab Unit is a 15 bedded unit delivering intensive rehab to patients with neurological conditions.

The post holder will be part of a multidisciplinary team supporting the Occupational Therapy service through clinical, administrative and organisational duties. The post holder should possess excellent communication skills and evidence of working within a team.

The role involves working closely with qualified Occupational Therapists and other members of the multidisciplinary team, both on the unit and in patients own home, as required. The post holder should be able to work flexibly to potentially cover 7 day working.

There is regular supervision and in-service training, alongside a supportive learning environment.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be supporting with the delivery of OT interventions on the Plym Neuro Rehab Unit, working with patients age 16 and above during their in-patient rehabilitation.

They should demonstrate an understanding of the role of OT and multidisciplinary team working in rehabilitation and knowledge of the rehabilitation process.

Ability to work flexibly to support therapy services, with good time management and the ability to manage / prioritise own workload.

Ability to accurately feedback observations and to document in clear and concise ity to work as part of a team, but also being able to use own initiative and know when to seek guidance.

To be able to work unsupervised in ward, department and community settings, and also to support with group settings.

Previous experience of working in health / care setting.

Good written and verbal communication skills, including IT skills.

Good general standard of education with evidence of numeric / literacy. Technical Qualification e.g. City and Guilds NVQ 3 or equivalent.

    Job responsibilities

    To work with neurological in patients on the Plym Neuro Rehabilitation unit based at, Mount Gould Hospital as part of a Multi Disciplinary Team.

    Carry out identified aspects of a patients treatment programme under guidance and instruction of the qualified Occupational Therapist. Contribute information to the evaluation process and has a knowledge of evaluation measures and tools for that clinical area.

    Takes responsibility for implementing treatment programmes following treatment goals as agreed with the OT through graded activity ensuring the persons privacy / dignity is maintained.

    To assist OT in setting up / arranging assessments and treatment sessions, this may include both standardised assessments and home visits which will include liaising with family / carers, departments and organisations.

    Responsible for co-ordinating own day to day workload.

    Carry out observations and treatments, following the guidance given by the Occupational Therapist, whilst maintaining the persons privacy and dignity. This may include teaching new techniques and/or teaching the use of equipment.

    Use own judgement to vary and adapt choice of activity to fit patient needs and capabilities to achieve treatment goals.

    Planning and running of therapeutic groups. Referrals and individual objectives are received from the OT but the group may be run unsupervised, examples of groups run are gardening and lifestyles.

    To be aware of and carry out therapeutic positioning of patients as guided by OT.

    To deliver, install, demonstrate and instruct in the safe use and maintenance of rehabilitative equipment as prescribed by the OT.

    To provide advice and information as requested and with guidance of supervising OT when treating patients on Plym Neuro Rehab Unit or home setting.

    Maintain high standards of care at all times in a manner sensitive to the individual patient needs acknowledging and respecting their rights, individual values, cultural and religious diversity at all times.

    Contribute to the evaluation process through knowledge of simple evaluation measures and tools in clinical area.

    Make accurate observations verbally and written, demonstrating the ability to share evaluation information with the MDT.

    To observe a patients behaviour, mood, functional ability and cognitive responses accurately recording information in both written and verbal format to share with the MDT.

    To communicate sensitively with patients, relatives and carers using both verbal and non verbal skills.

    Maintain confidentiality and security of patient records in line with Organisational policy and procedure.

    To communicate effectively by phone and electronically with a wide variety of departments / organisations both internally and externally to the Organisation.

    To be responsible for record keeping in line with Organisational, Professional policies and procedures.

    Shared responsibility for ensuring all clinical areas and equipment are kept tidy and ready for use, reporting defective equipment / facilities to unit manager and ensure they are removed from use.

    Shared responsibility for maintaining stock and advising on resources, including handling of petty cash, as required.

    To be familiar with Organisational transport booking procedures and book transport for patients as requested.

    To carry out / assist with department administrative duties.

    To undertake as directed collection of statistical data as required.

    To undertake other duties that might be considered appropriate by the supervising OT in consultation with the post holder.

    To support the MDT team with the induction and support of new staff members and students as directed by OT.
