The Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is offering an exciting opportunity for you to join our Surgical Department in Band 5 Rotational Surgical Nurse Posts.

Our Surgical department has three day-surgery theatres, six main operating theatres for all types of general surgery, trauma and orthopaedics, gynaecology, maxio-facial, urology, ENT, obesity, bariatrics and obstetrics. 2 acute wards specializing in bariatric, orthopaedic, urology, colorectal, and general surgery. Successful candidate will have the opportunity to rotate among our surgical department, including theatre and day stay unit.

You will need to understand the importance of patient care and be able to demonstrate the ability to assess, plan, provide and deliver care. You must be able to make effective decisions in partnership with the wider MDT.

You will be placed on a supportive and structured education and training pathway, centred on reflective supervision, clinical skills, research and leadership. 

Main duties of the job

Main duties include:

  • The post-holder will be responsible for delivering high quality patient centred care. In accordance with trust policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Take clinical responsibility for patients within your allocated area of work. Continually assess, plan implement and evaluate treatment.
  • To be an effective practitioner with the ability to provide clinical expertise in the care of the patient.
  • The post-holder is required to lead the nursing team in the absence of a band 6/7.
  • Monitor the level and standard of work undertaken by junior staff and to guide, coach and advise them as appropriate.

  • Registered Nurse (or about to qualify)
  • Evidence of professional development
  • Desirable criteria

  • Preparation for Mentorship course (or ability to complete)
  • Skills/ Abilities

    Essential criteria

  • Ability to effectively function as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Ability to assess patients; develop, implement, and evaluate a plan of care.
  • Ability to effectively prioritise own workload.
  • Ability to safely administer medicine in accordance with NMC Guidelines for the administration of medicines (2002)
  • Experience

    Essential criteria

  • Experience of working within a hospital setting (this can be gained through student placement)
  • Desirable criteria

  • A qualified nurse with experience of managing your own caseload.
  • Knowledge

  • Knowledge/understanding of confidentiality issues
