We have a fantastic opportunity to recruit rotational Band 5 Occupational Therapists to work in our well established supportive rotation. The areas are in Neurological / Stroke, Frailty and complex Elderly medicine, Urgent medicine Gastro & Oncology and Orthopaedics, Surgery including amputees .

You will be providing care to a diverse group of patients, providing high quality, evidenced based treatment. You will be working within a flexible and friendly team of staff who strive to improve the outcome of patients by providing them with the best possible, evidenced based care.

The acute setting is face paced and requires quick and decisive decision making. Here at Bedford we have an established preceptorship programme designed to support you transition from student to clinician. This includes protected supervision time,1 to 1’s, an allocated /designated supervisor, in-service training programmes. We have a peer band 5 supervision support group and is run by the Band 5’s journal clubs

Main duties of the job

To undertake assessment of patients with a diverse range of conditions dependant on rotation speciality.

To develop and deliver an individualised treatment programme and contribute to a timely discharge.

To manage own caseload with support from senior OT staff.

To assess, treat and rehabilitate patients in close co-operation with the multi-disciplinary team.

Assess, prescribe and make appropriate recommendations for treatment, discharge planning and equipment.

To access advice and support from Senior Occupational Therapists to promote clinical reasoning and skills for highly complex situations.

To liaise with relatives, community agencies and multidisciplinary team.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To prioritise workload and clinical needs in conjunction with a senior OT (where required) in order to provide an effective service.

To delegate caseload to other team members appropriately and oversee clinical tasks undertaken by assistants /students and provide appropriate relevant feedback.

To achieve a therapeutic relationship with patients, to explain the role of OT to patients and relatives and encourage patient participation.

To liaise with the Team Leader regarding the provision of Occupational Therapy and service demands.

To undertake any job when necessary as designated by the Occupational Therapy Manager.

To carry out assessments and discharges on the Acute wards on a Saturday or Sunday on an additional hours rota basis.

To maintain and develop professional and clinical skills in line with HCPC standards.

To identify and refer cases which require intervention from other services/agencies.

To keep up-to date records in line with current policies and procedures.

To ensure practice is evidence based and maintain own competencies through CPD activities.

To organise and complete home visits and assessments where relevant.

To cope with unpleasant working conditions.

To develop and maintain effective communication on professional/Trust issues.

To provide Occupational Therapy advice to the multidisciplinary team as required.

To attend case conferences and handovers.

To accept and undertake work in a willing manner and put time to effective use.

To attend and participate in staff meetings

To adhere to the College of Occupational Therapists Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct.

To comply with local and national standards of practice.

To follow statutory policies and procedures of The Service and Bedford Hospital Trust. To comply with all relevant Trust policies procedures, Professional standards and guidelines and the relevant Code of Conduct (HCPC). This will include those relating to Equal Opportunities, Health and Safety and Confidentiality of Information and attend all mandatory training e.g. Fire, manual handling, and infection control

Essential criteria

  • BSc (Hons) Occupational Therapy or equivalent
  • Experience
