Job Description

  • We currently have an exciting opportunity here at Smiths Detection, to join our leading Products & Technology Department, working within a team of knowledgeable and motivated scientists, technology experts and project leaders, driving forward product development and support for current and future chemical, explosives and narcotics detection products. This is a permanent role, site based in Hemel Hempstead, offering flexible working as and when possible.
  • You will provide scientific expertise and support, ranging from instrument and experimental design, planning and execution of experiments, analysis of data and modelling to the formulation and presentation of conclusions and report writing.
  • Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide scientific input and guidance to the design, build and testing of experimental equipment.
  • Plan and conduct original research for the purposes of design and performance enhancement of detection products.
  • Critically appraise experimental data and theory and provide guidance based on interpretation of data.
  • Identify gaps and propose additional work.
  • Contribute to project planning and review activities.
  • Support scientific aspects of products throughout their lifecycle.
  • Lead scientific work packages. 
  • Supervise the activities of other scientists. Previous experience advantageous.
  • Manage own time and work with a high degree of autonomy.
  • Provide support to off-site trials and tests.
  • Work in accordance with local company policies and procedures.
  • Provide hands-on support and up-to-date technical advice to Technical Authorities, Programme and Product Managers, at proposal, design specification, development, testing and production stages and assist in bid preparation.
  • Have a detailed knowledge of relevant Smiths Detection Products and related technologies and an understanding of other detection technologies and products

    The Individual

    Ideal candidate must have a degree in chemistry or physics, or a closely related subject. A relevant PhD is highly desirable but not essential. This role is suitable for someone who is passionate about what they do, with an inquisitive, practical and hands on approach. 

  • Experience of analytical instrument design desirable.
  • Knowledge of ion mobility spectrometry advantageous.
  • Experimental scientist with excellent data analysis skills.
  • Ion chemistry knowledge is advantageous.
  • High level of innovation and original research.
  • Excellent communication skills; ability to interact effectively with colleagues at all levels.
  • Must be a motivated and self-starting individual capable of driving themselves and others to succeed in project goals as part of a multi-disciplinary project team.
  • Able to successfully carry out projects/assignments of significant scope.
  • Independently determines general approach and specific solutions to technical problems
  • Working knowledge of other related disciplines and the ability to develop nonstandard and innovative approaches to work
  • Understanding and wide application of technical principles, theories, and concepts in the field.
